NWO meet-up in 2008?

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

I'll be honest with you...I'd love to go but work has gotten to be quite hellish recently. Too much going on to consider leaving the boundaries of Long Island.

I hope to be able to join a get together next year

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Yes, rotator is referring to how this get-together will go nowhere??? As in everyone wants to meet up in their own backyard, so no NWO convention/concert/get-together will happen, that's all...

One place should have been picked. and foot put down. If it was in Des Moines, then probably people from that area would go and nobody from San Fran would go ----thems the breaks. I think regional events should take place...

OK, already have. Glok and I were going to plan the L.A. event, he has a venue Ive got DJ rig/records ... 2 day event. 1 night at club, next day (or day before) record shopping/vintage clothes shopping. I could have patches made up, we could work on a gift bag with any product/cool item donations. minimal cost to be apart of it and minimal headache for promoters. kind of like a scooter rally without the scooters, although that could be part of it too. at this rate - thinking late summer at the earliest..Noone has alot of time or money to set it up, but something could work. piggybacking on another event will waterdown the actual gathering. I just wouldnt want to make it a NWO event unless it was backed and promoted by , well, NWO. Glok has alot of ideas for this as well, maybe he could enlighten...

oh yeah, go Chargers....

Well, if you combine people who grew up with KROQ and have family, friends, connections in L.A. and Orange County--Rotator's and Glok's actually makes a lot of sense. Let alone, Los Angeles/Bay Area people who picked these areas, likely due to location of where they live, could make it (though it wouldn't help the St. Louis people--and I know that we're discounting say people who grew up in a similar spirit say in New York, or people who discovered it in other parts of the country or even in other countries :) ).

I think it's a matter of going ahead and picking a venue and making a decision. I don't know what other people were planning in the other areas, but for the sake of what's been suggested, I'd go for Glok/Rotator's venue, if it comes to fruition.

Exactly, and all the more disappointing that it hasn't ever happened in SoCal. I love Glok and Rotator's idea. Given enough lead time, you know I'll try to make it...um, if I this KROQ ex-pat is invited that is. [:I]

Of course you are invited!!! For heaven's sake, all NWO-ers are invited, except those that wish to only show to commit violent acts on other members![}:)] (you know who you are...[B)])

On a serious note, I had talked to Rotator and Ben At Work last year to throw some ideas around, and then to MikeP. Mike and I never made our scheduled get together as I got a last minute consulting gig over that weekend, and Mike's just way to darn busy.

Anyway, the idea was/is thus:

Full Blown Event

3-Day event:

Day 1 - Friday Night:
Dinner get together with cocktails (no-host) at my friend's restaurant (Kung Pao Kitty) on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Wilcox (their URL is: http://www.kungpaokitty.com/). The owners and I go back to 1983 in the LA/OC Mod/Ska scene, we were in Club Impact together! So getting a free venue, and all folks need to do is either eat/drink or not, Rotator can DJ the event, we can even dance n there, we can get the place even exclusively if we have enough folks attending, otherwise we'll be in the rear of the restaurant to ourselves, and access to the adjoining door outside to patio area facing Wilcox.

Day 2 - Saturday Day:

An all '80s/New Wave/Punk/etc. Memorabilia/Record/CD/DVD Convention. Have tables/booths available for folks to sell/trade, etc. your stuff. Outside vendors and NWO members... fee to outside, either Free or very low cost to NWO members, mingle, food, beverage, etc., an All-day event from like 10 am to 4 pm!?

Day 2 - Saturday Night:

Concert/Dance event. Either hire a band to play, or go see a concert that will be in the area, or throw our own concert, have The Glass House in Pomona, CA avail. to book... maybe they'll be some big-name New Wave bands going through LA at the time, all will need to be coordinated, or we'll all just dance our asses off to DJ-ed music, and we can feature some of the great talent(s) here on the NWO...

Day 3 - Sunday Morning:

Farewell Breakfast Blow out... take more pics, say good-bye, wave hello, and send each other all off to the four corners, feel all warm and fuzzy, etc., etc.

So this is a full-blown adventure event, or there is the 1-day to 2-day event, any combo of events thrown together...

Any thoughts, ideas, perhaps you thought we'd just be getting together for some drinks??? Ha, I'm the master of making everything too BIG! So we can make a small gathering as well... just SoCal, and anyone who wants to fly out, so Blir, I don't think it's a SoCal wussy event at all, if we did the 3-day full blown course of events, need 6 to 8 month lead time to prepair... as for money, yes a flat fee for all to attend to cover costs, some things will be free of charge, others discounted, and some capital to float up-front costs, and then again we'll go small, like rotator's suggestion...

The thing about locations... I had only suggested to MikeP that we put LA down, since I'd organize and live out here on west coast, and threw in Chicago, as middle meeting ground if folks from New York/South didn't want to fly out here... group rates for air/hotel can be arranged (discounts, etc.) [Can you imagine the NWO only charted flight from the east coast/Canada???!]

San Francisco, although nice a city it is... don't need a car... getting venues could be tough, I always had a hard time in the late '80s early '90s when I ran my concert promotion company.

OK, I'll stop now; thoughts/ideas? Next...

Holy crap...I was indeed thinking that uncorking a liquor bottle to some new wave music would suffice as a meet-up. My main thought as I read this - and sincerely without trying to sound lukewarm to it - is simply whether or not there's a critical mass of members to support such a thing. It's been noted repeatedly that it's really a pretty small population of actual active posters here. Would you be extending this to a larger new wave community to make it work or do you think an NWO-only population would support it? Maybe your burst of enthusiasm and creativity will be what it takes to make this work with just the latter, but I'd make sure to get some commitments beforehand obviously. You know I'm always game.

AND, we can do that to Blir[:D], instead of the big event stuff. -OR- The main event... as described above.

After reading many members posts on this thread, I don't think they wanna shell out $30/$40/$50 bucks to make a three-day event happen for "members" (and their signifgt. others) only, or even attend something like this, if organized, or maybe they do now that the cat's out of the bag so to speak, and no one really knew what was really being planned.

As I see it, if a gig happened, we'd have to open it up to the general public to really make some money, and the profits could go into next year's NWO gathering, etc., etc.

Rotator suggested that The Cured (Cure cover band), and the Smiths' cover band and/or Depeche Mode cover band could play Sat. night, there's also an '80s band called the M-80s that plays in a small bar in my neck of the woods in Newhall, CA. They sound alright, but don't play any obscure new wave tunes, just the Top 40 hits! [:D]

Anyway, there's always the let's get together and crack a bottle open as well, and that may well be how it'll happen... Then the regional gatherings... this may make MikeP fly out to "meet and greet" everyone, like he's campaiging for Prez! [:p]

Anyway, just some thoughts...[;)] later, _Glok

Great minds think alike.. I was posting to your one-liner from before, but since you edited it into this longer post, you'll see we are thinking on the same wave-length...

Yep, larger NW population, of course, NWO members will always be treated better than Joe/Jane Q. Public!

The "critical mass" of members that would attend is the main thing, all elese is logistical/planning...

I'm glad your game, and thanks for the kind words of "enthusiasm!" Why are you still up so late???[:D] _Glok

we would need to sell alot of "tickets" to make these ideas happen....again... this is a very cumbersome project, but the owner of this site needs to step up and help us with a descision...

I was going to reply to your original post, but you deleted it... as it wouldn't show up. Sorry to learn of your Chargers!

Yes, a lot of work to do, and... Yes, tickets (loads probaly) will need to be sold... the cumbersome part is just aligning dates and coordinating schedules of bands, etc.--If we even go there...

MikeP, call me, have not heard back from since the last message I left for you (last year!)! [;)]

I support this, too.

I think you both (or you all, really) bring up good points. On the one hand, it doesn't need to be as elaborate as a 3-day gig full of scheduled events. Previous NWO get-togethers have consisted of, as Blir put it, opening up a bottle of liquor to new wave music. There have been some mini get-togethers involving concerts. But OTOH, it's definitely a cool draw to have some scheduled stuff. Glok has really let the creative juices flow....his schedule sounds amazing !

If you guys are really serious, then schedule it waaaay ahead of time and give people lots of lead time. Def. during the summer, when more of us have more flexible schedules and can more easily travel. If people schedule family trips/ other types of trips during the summer anyway, this could fit right in. For example, if someone was planning to bring their kids to Disneyland, this could fit right in. well, maybe the bringing-kids-thing could get unwieldy. But you know what i am saying.

There is a huge community of Duran Duran fans who organize a huge affair each year called Sing Blue Silver, usually in NYC area, lots of scheduled stuff, vendors, drinking, dancing, a screening of Sing Blue Silver, loads of activities, and it's a huge draw. So I could def. see the attraction of a glok-styled new wave "convention", b/c that makes it more fun. After all, you can always uncork a bottle of liquor to new wave music anywhere.

Just my 2 cents here. I'd be interested if I had plenty of lead time.

p.s. I will be in Anaheim (NOT Disneyland, though!) in mid-April BTW...anyone wanna meet up then ?!?[8D]

Thanks for your two cents! I appreciate them...

I would love to met up with you in April, which is also the month picked for my scooter club's reunion and worthy Sat. night event with DJ-ed music, food, drink, and fun in Hollywood... maybe you'll be in town that same weekend? If not, no big deal, we can meet up anyway, that's how I met Rotator last January (2007) when I was in San Diego attending a convention, and we met in the Hotel bar I was staying in...

Anyway I'm planning to meet up with birdmangirl in Las Vegas while I'm attending the giant scooter run there... (I know rotator went last year!)

So let the planning begin: Los Angeles this August 2008????!!!!

I have secured the site for Friday night, and have secured the Sat. site for the convention during the day and concert at night! Firday is in Hollywood, CA and Sat. is at The Glass House in Pomona--folks will need a car, as these two spots are like 80 miles apart from each other... in LA, it's just three freeways away! [;)]

LMK, what you guys are thinking...
