I watched it last night for the millionth time. I like the movie even if I hate Andrew "googlie eyes" McCarthy. But I can't get over 3 parts of the movie.
1-if his father was super rich and now willing to help, why not give Downy the money to pay Rip?
2- The part where Downy starts working for Rip.
3- Its a movie about clubs in the eighties. Do you think the director might suggest that they actually take dance lessons? You only see each person dance once and that is because they suck. Jamie Gertz: I will pass her on dancing but it was like she was listening to music we can't hear. And you could hear her shoes clocking around on the dance floor. Robert Downy: ok so he was high so he just did this spastic crack head dance. BUT!!!!!!!! Andrew Googlie eyes! He dances for about 2 seconds while Gertz watches and cries. I would too. I have to write about it because it was a major oops in the movie. He just does this weird walking thing. It was like Elain on Seinfeld. Yuck!

Yeah I saw it last night too. I really didn't find it too odd about the clubs, because there was a deeper situation going on 'DRUGS'.
It took me back to when everyone and their mother were on drugs.
Coke, XTC were big time players, it's a wonder we all survived.
I'm pretty sure some or a lot of ya'll lost some friends to drugs.
But I was lucky enough that me and my friends lived through it all.

By the way the book goes into a lot more detail...

Yes Phil, read the book! Very good.

The dad wouldn't give him the money because he had lied and stole to him and the family too many times. He was at his wits end and had probably already washed his hands of him many times over.

I think I will pick up that book. Thanks for the heads up guys. yea Ben the whole drug thing was rampant back then. I loved the movie because I was friends with a guy that was just like the Robert Downy guy. I don't know what ever happened to him because I washed my hands of that whole crowd. He got in big trouble more than a few times and I wanted nothing to do with that. I still wonder if he is dead or not. I would not be shocked. And the whole gay sex thing did not shock me either. It is crazy what drugs will do to a person and what they will do to themselves to get drugs. I'm pretty sure my friend did that shit too.

Was X as prevalent in the 80s? I was under the impression that it didn't really come around until the club/ rave scene in the 90s.

Yes, during the early 80s it was actually legal and clubs use to hand it out free...it was ban in I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) 1985. After the ban there was a huge supply and demand on it. I remember it was everywhere in the late 80s...it was that or coke or crack.

I think you're right. When I first moved to Boston in '85 it was all the rage, and it seemed like we were right on the cusp of Federal Regulation. I think it was probably the Fall or Winter of '85 when it was scheduled.

I lived near & worked at Harvard at the time & it seemed like there were TONS of chemists making a living off making ecstasy.

I have to be honest, although I haven't taken any drugs in many, many years, my experiences with ecstasy were unforgettable.
