What do you listen to these days?

I've turned into my parents--predominantly listening music back to my teenage years--which is new wave music. Although part of it is this wasteland of pop culture for this decade. Of newer artists and they're from the 90's (and it's now 2008, so that's telling to me)--I will always get and own new stuff by Tori Amos, Garbage, Radiohead, Bjork, and I would also say Portishead, but for Poritshead, it depends on them getting a new album out (at the rate they're going they may beat Kate Bush's record on hiatus!)

For artists of this decade, I mainly own tracks once I know a particular tune--and it's also partly because of the Itunes factor, I rarely get entire albums. With me listening to either my Ipod or Fred, I'm somewhat limited. Sometimes, I'll put on XM's Ethel to try to get up to date (and occasionally also XM's Chill or local Bay Area eclectic radio station, KFJC, or music I discover by chance from the Pandora radio station)--but hearing songs only once or twice in an odd while doesn't motivate me to buy the new music, as often. It's frustrating in this day and age which is Britney Spears/Justin Timberlake oriented, and with my Ilike account--I should probably download some of the free music they have of up and coming artists so I can actually be exposed to what great music is actually being ignored by the Clear Channel/Bar Code/"marketable music" culture. It is a harder business. My step nephew did form a 90s punk band some years ago while in college--they had gigs and everything--but they had to hang their instruments up as they were not getting anywhere--and my step nephew was definitely looking for stable income.

I'd probably need a list of the truly great albums from this decade, at the rate things are going. For now, I feel removed--while this decade is important to me as I'm now in my current job and institution I work at--both I like a lot--I feel somewhat removed from this decade. It's one I'm longing for it to end, with the hope that the 10's will be much better.

The evolution of my musical tastes has always been based in the 80's use of electronics and I feel there is a direct link from new wave electronic stuff to the contemporary artists I listen to today. I am sure this list will omit a number of groups but here goes anyway.

As everything old is new again it seems, I'm not really moved at all by the current slate of mainstream music. Instead, I find myself more engaged with my old Bowie, Gabriel & Tom Waits records. True mavericks way ahead of their time.

I've been on an eels kick lately - they just put out a best-of (that comes with a DVD of their videos) and a 2-disc rarities collection. What a great band.

The biggest songs on my iPod top 25 now are "Our Velocity" by Maximo Park (bouncy in a new-wave sort of way, but harder driving), The Editors, the new David Gray song, and the latest Duran Duran album. Oh, and songs from [i]Flight Of The Conchords[/i]. Check out their tribute to "West End Girls" from episode 2 called "Inner City Pressure." Funny stuff.

Hey, look at me - 500 posts! I know it pales in comparison to some other posters, but I've never reached this number of posts on any other message board before. Yay for me!

I recently picked up the MP3 album Prototypes by Les Prototypes, a french band, and I have to say: Wow. Anyone who likes the retro new wave sound would probably like the album.

They remind me a bit of Ladytron, The Rentals, and maybe a girl-punk band like The Raincoats. Very impressive album, with 10 (of 14) tracks being great-to-stellar. Check 'em out.

I just picked up the new MP3 album 'Saturnalia' by [b]The Gutter Twins[/b] (Greg Dulli, formerly of the Afghan Whigs, and Mark Lanegan, formerly of the Screaming Trees). This album is definitely not on the New Wave branch of the tree-- it's a dark, bluesy, sludgy, moody rock album, but it's pretty great. So good in fact, that I'm hoping to go see them live next week in NYC.
