Your Idea of Hell (in New Wave)

I read somewhere that Penn & Teller did an experiment where Teller was locked in a room for 48 hours and forced to listen to nothing but Residents albums non-stop. If you're not familiar with The Residents music their deconstructionist, harrowing & sometimes darkly funny take on rock is disturbing to sit though for many.

Teller went in loathing the band and came out of the experience completely converted (perverted?)to their twisted perspective. To me that's hell. That's pure psychotic 'Twin Peaks Bob' breakdown time.

If you were faced with a similar situation, who's music would provide the ultimate straight-jacket challenge for you?

The "Ralph Records 10th Anniversary Radio Special" is great!

By the way, it was Penn on the recording and it was all a gag for the the 10th anniversary of Ralph Records. In 1982 they released it on tape and, a few years ago Ralph America did a limited edition, now out of print CD (complete with Penn on the cover in front of the motel he pretended to be locked in).

Penn is a longtime friend of The Residents. He was their MC on the Mole Show Tour back in the early 80s.

So, it wasn't for real, but its great fun to listen to. It's also interesting to hear just how much Penn's voice and speaking demeanor have changed over the years.

I can't think of anything New Wave at the moment (but I'm sure there's plenty, especially if we really broaden the "New Wave" designation to the more commercial fake new wave pop that was out then, too), however, the first thing that comes to mind is Technotronic and their album, "Pump Up the Jam: The Album" from 1989. I don't have to THINK it would be hellish, I KNOW it would be.

For a brief time I worked in a chain music store where they were only allowed a very limited choice of tapes to play in the store. One person in charge there was fond of putting the Technotronic album on frequently . . . and on looped play on top of it! [xx(]

The whole album sounded like one long song, "Pump up the Jam," and it was utterly dreadful to have to listen to. To this day I refuse to listen to that song if it comes on wherever I happen to be (and thankfully that doesn't happen very much).

The store is gone now, and I hope that Technotronic tape has long been erased or smashed into tiny bits! [:)]

Nina Hagen is close, but I'd imagine a little Johnny Hates Jazz, Jennifer Rush and the whole Dirty Dancing soundtrack to be my very personal purgatory, alongside Cher and Christopher Cross as the worst singers of all time on earth and in hell.
