Need your help for upcoming show on IRS records

A few weeks ago, I <a href="http://nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22766" target=_blank"> posted </a> about my <a href="http://www.wccnet.edu/studentactivities/radio/" target="_blank"> online radio show </a> (and accompanying blog post) that drew the attention of <a href="http://playitandbedamned.blogspot.com/search/label/Steve%20Lillywhite" target="_blank">Steve Lillywhite.</a>

For an upcoming show (maybe next Wednesday morning, maybe the Wednesday after that), I'd like to do a tribute to IRS Records.

So naturally, I'm looking for the wonderful folks here to provide me some feedback on their favorite IRS artists (or songs).

A few caveats:
<ul>
<li> The songs must be included on an in-print record. (For royalty reasons, I need to enter the UPC code from bordersstores.com into the station log) I'd love to play cuts from the Intimate Strangers album, but no songs from the band are anywhere.</li>
<li> No four-letter words or otherwise objectionable content must be in the recommended song. </li>
<li> I'm going to try to maintain a focus on the 80s, when A&M was distributing the label's products. </li>
<li>It must be something I like. I'm the DJ, right?</li>
</ul>

Definitely something off of the Bachelor Party soundtrack. I recommend "Something Isn't Right" by Oingo Boingo, or "What Kind of Hell" by The Alarm.

Actually, you'd be surprised – although, as I said, artists like Raise The Dragon/Intimate Strangers are problematic. Plus, it's only an hour long, but I might take over the 9 a.m. slot next week to turn it into a two-hour show.

I totally forgot the Bangles EP – and yes, I have it. Thanks for the reminder. My Fleshtones cut will probably be "american Beat '84" from the Bachelor Party soundtrack.

Lords of the New Church, Buzzcocks, Cramps (I love "Goo Goo Muck") and Dream Syndicate are all excellent suggestions that I'll try to follow-up on. I totally spaced on them. I knew there was a reason to rely on you guys! I'll listen to a few ofthe others – although a lot of their best output in the 80s was not on IRS.

I'm sick of "Mexican Radio" and will always hold it against WOV. I find the stuff Ridgway put out as a solo artist (and with Stewart Copeland a.k.a. Klark Kent) much more interesting.

Renaissance is an interesting suggestion, considering the entire reason that the band was signed was that Miles Copeland was their manager. I have the vinyl LP, but I believe it is out of print.

I don't know how many of you guys have a background in college radio, but I know that IRS was one label where you eagerly awaited (and played) almost everything they sent your way. Basically, you trusted their tastes implicitly. (Elektra and Sire were like that for a while, but not with IRS' consistency). They also put together excellent compilation cassettes/CDs that they distributed at events like CMJ and NMS that I played to death. I'll try to post a few of them on my blog next week.

One additional thing and only slightly related: Does anybody have an mp3 of "Middle of Nowhere" by House of Schock? It can be found on the Bull Durham soundtrack and the group's only album. I have the soundtrack on vinyl, but haven't done any ripping in a while.

For next week's Two-Fer-Tuesday, I'd like to pair Jane Weidlin's "Blue Kiss" with "Middle of Nowhere" My point: Go Go solo efforts don't begin and end with Belinda Carlisle's pablum.

Miles Copeland really started his label on the back of Wayne County & The Electric Chairs, who were brought over from NYC along with Cherry Vanilla in order to get his brother's band, The Police, off the ground; The Police served as an opening act for Wayne County and the backup band for Cherry Vanilla, in the days when no one on the punk scene
wanted to know about The Police; Wayne was one of the top, most successful touring artists in punk back then, The Police,Elvis Costello, and Adam & the Ants, to name a few,all got their start as opening acts for Wayne County & the Electric Chairs

Wayne County & The Electric Chairs were on Illegal in the UK,Miles
put the stuff on IRS compilations here, and then Wayne Signed with Safari
Records in the UK,leaving Miles in the lurch(Copeland REALLY wanted to get his hands on
"F**k Off" at the time)

well ... these two things mainly kept me away to suggest anything worthwhile to play to u , as i find your caveats simply ridiculous !

only fyi : if u want to do a REAL label special , then u simply must incl. most likely also @ least a few songs by bands that aren't your personal favorites , as it's jus' ridiculous to do an irs rec. label special & not play any song by - only for example - wall of voodoo , because ...

u could've played "lost weekend" from their "call of the west" album or maybe "far side of crazy" from their time with andy prieboy as their singer instead , but as u certainly won't consider that , as u seem to be so idiotic to dislike a band for jus' one song that irks u , i'm not even interested to listen to your radio show(s) after all , sorry !

True story - the first "job" I ever had in the music business was as an intern at IRS Records. Not the A&M era but - still - was pretty awesome.
