From what I have grafted from interviews, net analysis, and pre song radio banter, Scritti was very much 'tongue in cheek' and painfully measured with their (his) use of lyrics. He (Green Gartside) wanted to make an album (and I'm paraphrasing here) that paid tribute to pops cliched vocabulary, thus much use of the word "baby" etc. When you glance at C&P you will notice some pretty obvious juxtaposition of obscure literary reference and banal lyrical cake walk.
Catch some interviews with Green Gartside on Youtube, like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5_CZ9ZRiQM on a show I used to watch as a kid called Sounds, good Aussie music show. Anyway Green was a smart, and carismatic cat. Don't, unless you'd like to risk peril, dismiss Scritti.
