Many of us synth guys were science and science fiction motivated to some degree. Arthur C. Clarke was an inspiration when it came to thinking "out of the globe." I have written a brief obit for him in my blog.

He borders on the historic. I must have been unbelievably skinny with unimaginably perfect skin when I first read Childhood's End. Weird that I'd think of it that way. Maybe 'cause his books were that ingrained in my childhood, giant book and music nerd that I was.

Blir - Childhood's End is one of my all-time favorites. "2001" is my favorite movie and I liked the book too. "Rendezvous with Rama" is also quite good. Clarke had a way of bringing the reader a sense of wonder at mankind's possibilities that no other writer has matched for me. I have to say though, when he started collborating with Gentry Lee the quality went way down. I'll remember him for his best work.

Inventor of the communications satellite as well! One of my faves, along with Ray Bradbury who is still hanging in there. "Rendezvous with Rama" was absolutely fascinating -- Clarke's attention to detail and scientific accuracy made his stories all the more immersive and real. He will me greatly missed even if his most accomplished works are well behind him.
