What kind of gasser are you?

I sold my beloved SUV when gas began approaching the $2 mark. At that point (2005), I knew things were only going to get worse, and it already was costing me about $60-80/wk.

I now have a Little Red Thing and I put about $25 in it every other week. But, I work from home and I do all my grocery shopping/errand running once a week, so it's not like I drive around all the time.

I don't drive much so I put about $25 per week. But for the first time I can see how the price of gas is changing how people live. I have a friend that commutes far every day and his wife just had to go back to working because they need the money. This summer the gas is going to kill me because I go to the beach every day. I just read that our all knowing government just passed laws making auto makers change the cars to 35 mpg in the next few years. If they can do that, then why the fuck didn,t they make cars with that gas mileage years ago? Sad thing is that we all know the answer.

Have to admit I thought this was a fart question - I was all ready to spill the beans, so to speak [:0]

I always fill up the tank - I hate making unnecessary trips to the gas station. We also use the local grocery store's $.10 off per gallon promo - it helps. I don't drive very far for work but I am a "basketball/soccer/baseball" mom who can't avoid driving to tournaments when they're out of town. Currently driving the Honda minivan that gets pretty darn good gas mileage (plus it has the added bonus of a DVD player for the kids to watch movies)!

Has anyone else noticed that the price of gas has a direct affect on people's inclination to speed? I've noticed for the past few weeks (since gas went consistently over $1.00 per litre) people have been driving much more conservatively.

The last time I noticed this was in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when gas hit about $1.40 per litre.

I work out of my home almost exclusively, and put maybe 100 miles on my car in a month. I bought a 2007 in Oct 2006, and as of now have 2,080 miles on it. I always fill up, but it's sometimes 3 months or more between tanks. I've bought gas just once this year so far, back in January.

Now...........on the couch, I produce high octane, especially after a big plate of nachos.

After Katrina's gas prices, I started driving a lot slower. I drive a Grand Cherokee and was driving usually at 130 kmh, now seldom go above 110 (highway of course). I noticed a huge difference in how much gas I was using. I filled up once in 2006 and have been topping it off once I get down to half a tank ever since.

I know it is one of the first things they teach, but if you stop the jack rabbit starts at every light you save a ton on gas. That dumb ass move burns a ton of gas. Here in Brooklyn, anyone next to you at a light must burst ahead of you. Its like it is a law.

I must be weird. My speed and driving habits are determined either by how late I'm running or what music I'm listening to. Still, even if I'm on time and listening to talk radio, I'm usually anywhere from 15-25 mph over the speed limit. I'm sure if it was a moonlit night and I was on an Arizona highway, it would be more like 50 mph over. [:D]

$20 at a time. I am fortunate in that I work 4 miles from home so this will last me more than a week. I never seek the lowest price. I go to one of 3 stations near me that I know have quality gasoline.
I look at the price of gas with morbid curiosity but it doesn't impact my life greatly since my consumption is so low.
My wife's job is even closer to home but I always fill her tank. She has an obsession with this and, quite frankly, you have to pick your spots. I don't care enough about this to even argue with her.



We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

I will admit that I have gotten that cheapo gas once in a while. Is occasional use of that going to have a negative impact on your engine ? I put in a bottle of that STP Fuel additive every other fillup...does that help ? It's been a while since I filled up with that cheapo gasoline, but should I avoid it now forever ?

p.s. There was just a big story here last week in ALbuquerque that several gas stations had diesel fuel accidentally pumped into their tanks by the refinery delivery trucks, and all these poor unknowing drivers accidentally filled up with diesel. Of course this wasn't discovered until their cars started sputtering and whatnot a few miles later...that sucked! But the gas stations were all offering to pay repair bills as long as you brought your receipt to them. That was cool. the refinery that made the error was less helpful.

wow, thanks Dave for that link.
I looked into it a little more, and opinions are all over the place (i.e., [i]"no differences in different gas, just brand-name prices"[/i] to [i]"nasty carbon deposits, gunky fuel injectors"[/i]. I am one of those people who prefers maintainence on a car over expensive car repair bills. Knowing that this cheap gas could muck up the engine and lead to $bills$ is good to know.

I always fill up my tank and then deplete the tank to near-zero. Makes it easier to calculate the mileage I'm getting (typically 500 to 550 miles per tank).

I drive a diesel (VW Passat), which has a 15 gallon tank. I fill it with 12 gallons of dino-diesel at the local station, then I top it off at home with biodiesel purchased at a fuel distributor. Nowadays, the price of diesel matches that of biodiesel, so it's a no-brainer.
