Help with 10 new wave (guitar) best!!!

Hi,

for a local fanzine, I've been asked to make a list of ten unmissable (or the 10 best) new wave records. New Wave in the european sense of the description, I mean guitar-pop artist from around 1978 to 1982 making fast and hooky two minutes and a half songs. More close to power-pop not to synth-pop or post-punk.

I ask for your help, since I have a very personal taste in this and, although I will refer to my taste, I would like to receive some suggestions of bands or records you would include in such a list, not to miss a really unmissable one!

As an example, for this list Blondie or Phil Seymour are new wave, Soft Cell, Echo & the Bunnymen or A Flock Of Seagulls are not.

Im hoping a Joy Division album wont be left out on your list. Same with The Clash (London Calling) and early The Cure.

Well, these are the kind of music we don't really label as new wave, here in ol' Europe. Only the Clash could partially qualify. We need skinny trousers, vynil jackets, stripped t-shirts and thin ties! [:D]

The nature of top ten lists is usually a mix of overplayed and maybe an obscure track or two. My list absolutely falls on the well-known, but I think they typify the power-pop new wavey guitar sound and some punky stuff too.

Elvis Costello - What's So Funny About peace, Love & Understanding
The Records - Starry Eyes
Smiths - This Charming Man (Nice jangley guitar which became so identified with the movement)
Blondie - One Way or Another (I'm so sick of this song, but the guitar riff is immediately recognizable and different.)
B-52s - Rock Lobster - simple, ametuerish, very much what early new wave was about
Altered Images - See Those Eyes (another jangley song but more polished)
Plimsouls - Million Miles Away (a power-workout for power pop!)
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Sin in My Heart (Simple, harsh & primitive)

Well, to be true it's not exactly just a top ten list: I had to review every record of the list. That's why I wanted to be sure not to miss anything, and I got these thanks to your help.

Your lists also showed again that NEW WAVE as a musical label is a far more restrictive concept here than there. For you is almost every pop genre of first 80s, here is a restricted guitar-pop evolution of punk that lasted not further than 1982.
