I'd never heard of them, but after your tip and checking out their stuff on Youtube, I plan on checking out the Mercury Lounge show.

Anybody catch the Mercury Lounge gig? I missed it. Um...something...uh...suddenly came up.

I was there. They sounded great, but it was clear that the lead singer and lead guitarist were practically comatose with exhaustion. Thank goodness the bassist and drummer were in solid form.

They played most of their labrador recording, and finished with an oldie that 'no one here will know'-- which was pretty great. They went on shortly after 11PM and finished just before midnight. Overall it was a very good show, I just felt a bit bad for the guitar lead, who seemed so fatigued he could barely hold it together.

It reminded me of a Glenn Tillbrook gig I saw last year, where he and his band flew over to the NYC for a weekend pair of gigs and were painfully jetlagged.

The Mercury Lounge crowd was pretty interesting. I felt like I stepped back into the 80's. It's been a while since I've seen so many mohawks and colored hair. It really reminded me of Long Island in 1983.

Thanks for the update Sally. Kinda puzzled about the exhaustion given their day off after Pitt and before the NY gig...unless they had other commitments. I guess it makes me wonder if it's worth busting my ass to try to get to Brooklyn or Boston...yes/no? And do you recall the older song being "Make Me Last"? Any particular track highlights?

The older song was not 'Make Me Last'. If I recall correctly, they didn't play that song. [:(]

I would try to catch them in Brooklyn if that's reasonably convenient for you. To temper what I said slightly, they weren't comatose, but you could tell that they were dog-tired. It was a good show, and the lead singer's voice sounded great, and the band sounded great.

In my view, there weren't any standout performances-- the closing song was longer and more varied than their other material. Just about all of their material sounded very good. I had hoped they would introduce their songs a bit more, but most of the stage banter was brief (e.g. to introduce 'Explosions', the lead singer said 'This song is about growing up in Sweden'. Or before a new song, he said, 'Here's a new song. They like it but I don't like it so much.').

It would have been great to see them on this go around.

Most NYC gigs (especially weeknight) are next to impossible for Long Island weekday working stiffs like my wife & I to get to.

Really wish we could get bands like these out to <a href="http://www.imactheater.org/index.html#shows" target="blank">The IMAC in Huntington</a>.

One standout moment did occur to me later today.

I tend to discount the song 'Lost' somewhat because it's the obvious hit-single choice from the album that you sort of quickly grow past as you become a fan of the band. But during the concert, with all the murky album production stripped away, it really shined as a great song that the band nails in a live setting.

By the time the MO's reached the emotional peak of the song:

When all you do is wrong
When all you feel is wrong
If I could dream away...

The tenor of the singer's voice struck that perfect balance between anguish and longing, and as a spectator all I could do was grin at the power of the moment and its effect on me: goosebumps. [:D]
