Home Schooling

Occasionally, I get a student who was previously home-schooled, and whose parents are no longer able to home-school (one mom entered nursing school, another had to care full-time for an aged parent, etc.). Normal kids--and smarter than their peers on average. They'd go straight into the AP/ honors classes.

Not at all surprising. Every teacher I know would say the same thing.

My wife and I briefly considered it for my oldest son, who was having a difficult time at our local public school. I'm not opposed to it, but I think it would be a significant added strain on the family in general. But then again, when you have no control over the curriculum and all the private schools suck, why not. In the end, we stuck it out with the public school and tried to manage the situation by meeting with my son's teacher. So far, so good.

IF the parents take the time (or even HAVE the time) to fully educate themselves on 1) the educational process and 2) the social implications and make sure the child becomes well-educated AND a well-rounded individual, it should probably be OK.

It seems like it would take a tremendous amount of commitment on the part of the parents/guardians to make it work like its proponents would like to have it work.

Not having kids and having no plans to ever have kids, I really don't care one way or the other. (Hypothetically-speaking, if I had kids, they wouldn't be home-schooled, because their hypothetical father is not terribly bright.) But at the same time, I'm reminded of this stupid little sitcom that was on TV a few years ago called "The O'Keefes"... and more than that, I'm reminded of all the wacko, nutjob home-schooling parents who were ranting and raving and starting petitions because its network dared to air a show that was a) basically cancelled before it premiered, and b) was burned off during the summer.
