*snip*

They mix the avant-garde elements of Japan's music with Duran Duran's pop sensibilities to make an awesome hybrid!

Perhaps it's that hybrid sound you describe that turns me off.

And add Japan to my list. Never could get into them.

New Order: The remants of Joy Division where the only member with any talent hung himself when he realised how shit he was.

Smiths/Morrissey: Surburban white teenage rubbish who have NO idea what suffering is (I do, I've heard him) and Morrissey is the only one that truly understands. Pretentious arrogant twit.

Cure: Studenty teenage wank. Let me know when Rob runs out of smug pretentiousness.

Depeche Mode: Starting off a young synth band with their heads stuck up their collective arses to middle-aged men with their heads stuck up their collective arses.

Gary Numan: When you get round to writing a second tune let me know.

Jimmy Sommerville: I find his voice SO irritating! Funny how Bronski Beat went on to have the biggest hit of their career after he left.

Hayzee Fantayzee: Aural wankery 'performed' by a couple of stick who couldn't hold a note in a bucket. Both deserve a good kicking and so does the arranger who must of been desparte for money after being the man behind the excellent Animal Magnet.

Husker Du had exactly one good song, "Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely." Even still, that's one more good song than The Birthday Party had.

As someone who owns multiple CDs by both of those bands, and agrees with you, that made me chuckle.

(I had a radio show. It was a free license to buy stuff.)

Back in the heyday I was much more picky about which new wave bands I did and didn't like...but now I pretty much find something to like in most of them. Heck, I even found a few other good Nik Kershaw songs when I piced up a compilation of his.

That said, I agree with Spindlebrook - if we are to include the Stone Roses in this discussion, "Fools Gold" is one of the lamest songs I have ever heard. I presume it was huge in the UK based on all the import comps it appears on, but it made it more difficult for me to listen to their decent stuff with unbiased ears.

I also agree on the Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Daniel Ash thing...never got into them. But there is one exeception in that genre - I love "Wasteland" by The Mission!

You make a good point there with which I fully agree, but technically they are so they get included.

Just enjoy slaughtering the sacred cows of the 80's, all of them have mad cow disease.

Oh, Bob Geldof? Raising your fees after Band Aid 20 is not on. As is taking all the plaudits after Midge Ure did the hard work of organising it all, just like you did last time you vainglorious egotistical parasite. [V]

I'm pretty shocked to see some of the artists I see on this post. The Clash? The Jam? Joy Division? The Beat? XTC? Madness? Depeche Mode? Wow...caught me off guard.

Okay...to each their own.

For me, not a big fan of Japan, at all. There are several other bands mentioned like Haysi Fantayzee that just failed to have enough material to warrant mention anyway (though, I just DID, didn't I).

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Oh yeah...Thompson Twins aren't a big fave of mine either. I do like In The Name Of Love but that was it.

The Cure and The Smiths. SomebodySomewhere said my feelings about the Smiths perfectly. I like "Just Like Heaven", but Robert seemed to be trying to have a big hit.

I like 'em, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the B-52s yet. There's only such much Fred Schneider anyone can take.
