Best are most of the ones already mentioned (except maybe Martin Rushent). I especially liked Rupert Hine's sound, even if it didn't always work with the band he was giving it to.
My picks for worst are probably not anyone ever's heard of. But Ken Scott was usually disappointing, Bill House was a "turn the dials, collect the paycheck" hack, and the totally incompetent Robin Geoffrey Cable ruined one of my favorite albums in the world.

Aww, it's that pesky "art versus commerce" argument again...you're absolutely right, of course, but it doesn't mean I have to actually play the gloppy stuff. Twenty years later, I still go back to the earlier, gritter stuff as having more lasting value ... but that's (necessarily) subjective.

Most artists work that I really hold dear happens to be less fucked with by a producer. It's odd though, that most of the aforementioned producers are pretty slick. no mention of Steve Albini, or other 'lo-fi' producers. Still though, If I could get Timbaland to produce one of my tracks, I could roll the Brinx® truck up.

As for Kahne screwing them up, it's not his fault that Translator only managed to write one memorable song. You can only work with what you have to work with, ya know.
