Bed covers - I generally approve of them, unless they're made of burlap.

Album covers - Some are awesome, some suck really bad.

Wheel covers - Pretty useful I suppose.

Song covers - USUALLY suck, like that first one posted here. HOLY CRAP! Marvy what are you smoking? Also damn you Jason superscript 2 for mentioning Coil - Tainted Love because I was gonna compare that song to it. I mean, I like Tainted Love, but the Coil version has a BPM of like 1.

I haven't listened to all the ones listed here, but the only two I've seen that I like are the Letters to Cleo - Cruel to be Kind, and Orgy - Blue Monday, which is good but not better than the original.

There are covers I like a lot but off the top of my head I can't think of any besides the "Breaking the Law" one that our own Rotator did and posted some time ago.

Not really new wave, but I recently heard the Be Good Tanyas' cover of Prince's [i]When Doves Cry[/i]. I have to admit I really like it.
And I really don't like Prince.

"Crap" is not a strong-enough word to describe those two covers.

Both those covers are absolutely, positively awful, horrible, shitty, stank ass messes-- ranking with that equally horrid cover of "Take on Me" by The Jonas Brothers.

Not New Wave, but my favorite cover is k.d. lang doing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Agreed! The most horrid cover ever. What Gwen Stefani failed to grasp was the true passion with which Mark Hollis sang that song. Had she gotten it, she would never have attempted to copy it.

God, I hate that guy from Placebo's voice! "Where is My Mind" was perfect the first time around.

I also hate whenever the emotional gravity of a song is completely missed by the artist covering it, a good example being EVERY cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" I've heard, especially Paul Young's smiley stoll through it. Duran Duran attempting Velvet Underground is another good example.

Right on Doug. The stuff about missing the emotional gravity sure hits to the core of bad covers, even more-so than just bad musicianship or downright obnoxiousness.

I'm also not usually one for completely direct interpretations, but the cover I'm enjoying the most right this minute is actually Boy Kill Boy's spot-on version of "It's Different For Girls":
