"I just don't get the hype..." How many times have you said that after listening to a song? I know it's happened to me a lot. Let's keep all the songs strictly "New Wave" please!
I'll get the ball rolling with a couple of my most notorious:
Simple Minds: New Gold Dream - This has got to be one of the most overrated songs I've ever heard. Many people say it's the Minds' best track! I completely beg to differ. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE the New Gold Dream album, it's just that this track pales in comparison to the rest (Ok, "Somebody Up There Likes You" is crap). Starts out well with a solid disco beat, nice bassline and that catchy, danceable melody. Then, once Kerr's voice kicks in, it's all downhill. It begins to lose steam, gets repetitive and Kerr sings the most ridiculous vocal hook ever ("81,82,83,84"). The track's well over 5 minutes long, but after about 3 minutes you're just wishing it would end. Seriously overrated.
OMD: Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans) - Could never understand the appeal of this song. IMO it's one of OMD's weakest. At least the last song (NGD) starts strongly, I think everyone would agree with me that the first MINUTE of this track is just noise. Then, finally the drum machine arrives with a solid beat and a quite nice synth line is introduced. The first verse is promising, and you begin to think we're actually building up to something here. But guess what? The song goes NOWHERE. The military beat gets irritating and the synth becomes boring and repetitive. McCluskey's usually wonderfully charming voice becomes too strained and he just sounds awful. The song ends that way it started - tuneless. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE Architecture & Morality, it's just that this is by far the weakest track on it.
So, what do you find are some of the most overrated new wave tracks out there???
