Stuff we did...Part 1of 2

It’s has been kinda quiet around here lately so I thought I’d tell on myself. I live in a pretty dead community as far as culture/fun goes. I’m halfway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland so an hour drive will give me some art museums and clubs but around here….well, it’s pretty boring. I can go to Youngstown and check out the Butler art museum but it seems like it never changes.

We have to find ways of amusing ourselves so, for the past 28 years, my friends and I have been trying to drum up some kind of excitement….something to shake this burb up. Our first attempt at drumming up some fun worked pretty well. We made a 42 lb. smoke bomb out of sugar and other selected ingredients and had it set to go off right before the July 4th fireworks. There were 5 of us involved. We synchronized our watches and had lookouts stationed around the area. Our circular fuse (timed to go off in 8 minutes so we could be away from it when it went off) jumped track and went off in about 2 minutes giving me and Makel (not his real name) just enough time to get away. A pinkish / orange flame shot about 25 feet in the air and a huge orange cloud settled inside the “bowl” where local schools play football. There were maybe 100 – 150 people sitting inside the bowl to see the fireworks but not for long. The orange cloud didn’t smell very good and everybody scattered. Makel and I didn’t get to see the initial flame because our backs were to it as we walked away but the rest of the guys did see it and said it was spectacular. What fun.

Our next few attempts went off without a hitch but we never had any feedback so we considered them failures. Makel and I got some old surplus weather balloons (not the huge ones but pretty good sized nonetheless). We bought some helium and filled them up but before we sealed them of, we inserted green glow sticks and let them go. They looked pretty cool at night floating off in the distance…strange glowing green orbs lazily floating about. We hoped to see UFO reports in the paper but never did. We attempted this a couple more times over the next few summers but never saw any results.

For our next mission, we thought a crop circle would be nice. We scouted out a nice area and set about making the tools we would need to make our circle. I made a couple of midnight runs to check and see if the location would be feasible but it turned out that the farmer was a night owl and the area was well lit at night. We abandoned this one but held it in reserve for future use.

I’m not sure where this one came from but we picked a small random tree and decided to “water” it ourselves (under cover of darkness). Our watering was a water soluble blue dye mixed with water of course, we didn’t want to kill the tree….just change the color of the leaves. I was caught. A neighbor asked me the next day what I was doing to the tree last night so I abandoned that one. I think I’ll start it up again since said neighbor has moved. We were hoping that the dye would color the leaves so I guess we’ll have to wait until I try this one again.

those sound like my kind of adventures. I especially think the tree one is funny; as long as the dye is given with lots of water, it shouldn't hurt it, and boy, can you imagine what the neighbors will think of that ?

Holy crap! There's an art museum in Youngstown? I would think a murder museum would be more in order, unless things have changed in the last ten years or so.

Ha! I remember as a kid, we were watching Hawaii 5O and Dan-O was talking about a criminal from Youngstown Ohio....we were shocked.

Youngstown is pretty much dead. Hardly any talk of the mob anymore. I think even they moved out.

We used to kill time by going to the beach and saving sea creatures that got caught up in these weird weather balloons with glow sticks in them.

It all started when Idora Park closed. [:D] The death knell was the demise of the steel industry in the early 80's. I grew up in a town about 15 min over the PA border. I can relate to boring.

I don't think blue dye is going to make a tree's leaves change color. It would be interesting to hear about it though if you ever do it again!

Here's one for you when you're all bored: You know those deer crossing signs with the big Buck rearing up & jumping? Take a 2 inch piece of black electrical tape and attach it to his crotch area so it looks like he has a boner. Apply to every one of those signs you see some night. It looks like it's part of the sign.

Some girl I know from Bfflo told me about this prank when she was in college....[;)] I can't look at one of those signs without thinking of it - cracks me up every time.

You know, I've lived in this area since 1972 and went to Idora Park one time. I did ride the Jack Rabbit though. We came from the Pittsburgh area so we were Kennywood people.

I believe that would be surgical gloves tangled with used needles. You know, medical waste from New Jersey.


We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.
