Wow.

To tiger_mn, who questions my abilities as a moderator, even though those skills have absolutely nothing to do with this discussion: I'm not a moderator 24 hours a day, and as a matter of fact currently not at all, but I am a person 24 hours a day, please remember that. Your language and conduct is something I could do without. For the record, I don't curl up into a fetal position - in fact, I would have by now had a few offline chats with you about your conduct and future at the board, then left it in your hands to decide what that future would be. As for the rest of your post - it speaks for itself, and I'll leave it at that.

To club80, what can I say? How sad. I had hoped for more.

Last but not least, Philip - yours are easily the most telling words issued here this evening. "I guess some good advice for new people here would be to read up on the threads and see what we are all about." Yes Philip, words to the wise indeed. Read about how if you dare question the antics of some boisterous members or offer an opinion that runs counter to the prevailing mindset, you will be skewered without mercy. Fairly warned be thee.

Philip then ends with the ominous "If it is not your type of fun then it is not your type of place because this is who we all are." So true Philip, so true - for if you aren't like us, we don't want you here. We don't want you here because we'd have to accept new ideas, new ways, and worst of all, a new level of courtesy and understanding. Nicely put Philip - you certainly have a way with words. As I have no wish to be stabbed in the neck, I'll make a mental note not to draw into question your photographic skills in future.

I guess that's how you came to be the World's Greatest Photographer.

<br>Mod from another board, everyone was just playing around. To discuss Celine Dion on a New Wave board is really out of place and I wouldn't expect to see many of her fans here. (I'm not one of them myself)

It always makes me a bit skeptical when a new member makes his or her debut in a thread like this. Wouldn't you want to post about new wave music before you get into it about Celine Dion with veteran members of this board?
Considering this is the 'not necessarily new wave' section and contains topics on anything and everything, it seems biased to point out that discussing Celene Dion is out of place. If this section can discuss sexual habits and pretty much anything else that goes, what exactly makes Celene Dion out of place? Just curious. I thought that was what this section was for. Seems you're trying to censor a topic because of maybe who initiated the topic, not because of the topic itself. I would guess that had the "right" members initiated this topic, it would be more than okay with you. If this section is truly for anything, than anything includes Celene Dion, unless you mean anything acceptable to you and a select few others. I don't care personally for her music, but any discussion here, good or bad, should be ok. A recent new topic about a tragic, granted stupid and preventable accident, causing a teenager to be decapitated, that has responses making jokes about it, this is ok, apparently not out of place. I fully realize people joking about that incident, or Celene Dion, are just that, jokes or poking fun at things. That's just what we do. My only question/issue is you singling out this topic on Celene Dion as somehow being out of place amidst topics ranging so wildly everywhere that it seems very biased as a moderator to single this one topic out. If I don't care for a topic, I just won't read it. But in this section, as it has historically shown, just about anything seems to be, and should be, fair game.

OK, so I know I said I won't post here anymore, but now that you've all admitted you were just kidding, it seems easier to talk to you. I could swear from your posts one could never guess it was all a joke (learn to use "[;)]"!). I thought you guys were serious.

First off, I have to admit you were quite funny, but I (and MFAB) found it difficult to laugh (though I'll admit I regrettably chuckled at club80's "hind legs" comment). It's hard to laugh when you guys freely attack somebody you don't know at will. Humor, like everything else in life, has its limits. I'm all for having a good laugh (IMO that's the main point of the NNNW section), but relentlessly insulting an innocent human being does not qualify as humor in my book, nor should it anybody else's.

Once I read Philly's "fucking ugly" comment, I immediately put myself in Celine's shoes. If I were her and read that comment about me, how would I feel? You people should ask yourselves: If all these insults were about you, even if it was all ostensibly a "joke", would you laugh it off and say "Haha! I'm a horseface!!" or would you be truly hurt? I won't speak for everyone, but for myself (and MFAB) we'd feel the latter.

It's just not funny guys. I don't know what she's ever done to you to deserve this. This whole "joke" was completely unmerited and unnecessary. You could've just said "That was a terrible cover!" and left it at that (wasn't that the point of this thread?). To go on about her looks was pathetic to say the least.

I won't put all the blame on Philly, but he should know that this is mostly his fault, and had many repercussions (like rotator started hurling personal abuse at MFAB and myself). This thread ended up becoming damn ugly because of Philly's immature comment. And yes, I say "immature" because this sort of humor is schoolboy stuff. Days when I used to run around the playground I could hear jokes like this and be OK with it. We were kids, after all. I thought you people would be wise enough to avoid such infelicities.

Still, I can't say that I'm not glad you admitted it was all innocent fun, but please, learn for next time that humans have feelings, and can get hurt by such comments. Like I said, I love to have a laugh and encourage humor in most cases, but you guys were very, very cruel.

I think you all owe Celine a big apology. [:)] If you can be courteous enough to do that, I'd be willing to accept that I was a spoilsport, even if I rightfully didn't catch the facetious side of your comments. I'd be willing to forgive you all for all of this (except rotator, for obvious reasons).

There is also a recent topic in this section called 'sappy 70s ballads' and that was not singled out as out of place, so obviously this section is okay for the Celene topic, regardless of any interest it may or may not have had. It obviously provided some entertainment value and served its purpose.

You're ignoring the intent of Marie's post and mine. Let's face it: by hook or crook MFAB supposedly stumbles onto the Outpost. A forum primarily dedicated to NW music. Yes the NNNW section is about anything and everything, but 90% of the other content is about music related directly or indirectly to that genre of music. A new poster wants to indroduce themselves and get to know others here and how to they go about it? By defending Celine Dion and Mike and the Mechanics? Sorry, but that smacks of passive/agressive type of stiring shit we've seen here numerous times. (Everyone remember how Georgie started out?) Her point is a valid one.

I think there are two ways to read Marie3's response. If you viewed "out of place" as meaning "not the norm" or "uncharacteristic", would that help? I didn't read her response as meaning "inappropriate" (which, would be another way to read it).

I think Marie3 was questioning why someone would, pardon the pun, "beat a dead horse", over the reaction to Celine Dion's physical appearance before even presenting themselves as anyone who even liked new wave. MFAB had a track record of about five minutes on this board and had yet to establish any credibility nor to discuss any music even resembling new wave. No one HAS to prove their worth, but it's probably not a great idea to antagonize other members, at least until you've earned some respect here. If you were at work and a new employee started and he or she was in the same position as you, would you allow them to berate you or call you to task without proving their worth? No, of course not. You would listen to their ideas, but you wouldn't accept being chastised. I think that this was Marie3's point

You said "If I don't care for a topic, I just won't read it. But in this section, as it has historically shown, just about anything seems to be, and should be, fair game". You get it. MFAB didn't really get it.

Minty, I'm glad to see you finally got it. We are very sarcastic here and when someone takes it to heart? Well then the gloves are off. We have all played victim to it. The more you would defend Celine, the worse we would get. Thats just how it is here. Should we stop and act more adult? I say "NEIGH"!

Mod from......I do not mean if you don't like it here we don't want you. I said it might not be for you. I want everyone to stay here. This has been fun. I'm just saying that some people might not like the sarcasm and cruel jokes and there are plenty here. Stay but just stop calling me Philip. I'll be brief, I have to catch a flight.

I must say this has been quite an eye opener. So, it's perfectly within our rights to make fun of things beyond people's control, so long as we qualify it with a halfhearted "It's all in good fun". Message received.

Incidentally club80, despite your hackneyed editing of my words, I will not be going anywhere. I've been neither rude, arrogant nor mob like in my approach to this matter; I've simply pressed for an answer to my original question, which was: Why would people chastise Ms Dion for her physical appearance when the discussion was debating the merits of the song she chose to sing?

Do you not think that, like you, she thought it would all be in good fun, or is that ability also reserved for a select few?

For purposes of this board and it's participants, I believe I've gotten the only answer I'm likely to get. It's nice to see that people like Minty and CounterCircular understand the essence of human kindness.

Hey, NWO gang,

"Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be -- or to be indistinguishable from -- self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time." - Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon.

Feed the troll if you must but realize the caveat: one hell of a stupid thread. Then again, I guess it is kind of funny.....*sigh*.....life on the internets.....
