Agreed! The most horrid cover ever. What Gwen Stefani failed to grasp was the true passion with which Mark Hollis sang that song. Had she gotten it, she would never have attempted to copy it.

devo - satisfaction
pet shop boys - always on my mind

love & rockets - ball of confusion

but yeah, most covers are crappy. largely because the band doing the cover usually sucks to begin with.

Yesterday while browsing in a store, I heard a very slow, lounge-y cover of "Making Plans For Nigel." Female singer, nearly acoustic, but sounded modern. When I got home, I googled it and found that it was Nouvelle Vague (never heard of them), and that they had several other covers listed on lastfm:
"Bela Lugosi's Dead " (? !!!!)
"I'll Melt With You"
"Let Me Go"
"Love Will Tear Us Apart"

I absolutely love what Nouvelle Vague did with the Wake's O Pamela. Their cover of Blancmange's Waves gets high accolades as well.

The weird part about covers is that they resolve in a black/white situation: you think they're great and they do justice to the original song or you think they suck and they completely devalue a song which you have in high regard.
But I've seen some good covers...
Ziggy Stardust- Bauhaus
The passenger- Siouxsie & the banshees
Bigmouth strikes again- Placebo (like it better than Running up...)
Orange Crush- Editors (I love REM but their version of Munich is not as good as this one)
If only tonight we could sleep- Deftones (it's the best Cure cover in my opinion)
Teardrop/Love will tear us apart- José Gonzalez (he's so talented, he makes great songs by himself and is the master of cover versions)
Personal Jesus- Johnny Cash (I can't believe no one's mention this one!)
Dead Souls- NIN
