On another note, Beck was once the next big thing and the second coming. That was a long time ago. He keeps putting out albums but is anybody besides the critics buying them?

Maybe it's just me but I don't get the appeal.

For contemporary great bands, The Foo Fighters would have to be in consideration.

Really? I'm not saying they aren't good, in fact I like QOTSA and Interpol a lot and White Stripes (my favorite on your list) have put out some awesome records but I'm willing to guess the general population will say huh? 20 years from now from most of them. Nickelback or even Creed would probably be more likely (shudders).

I could list 100 bands I think are better than Coldplay that are out right now, I just don't think they have the popularity but I guess the question can get pretty vague.

I'm pretty certain we would have quite a difficult time coming up with a list of the Greatest bands of The 80's, especially here at the NWO. I'm sure the general population and the population here would differ quite a bit.

I like "Talk" a lot, probably because of the Kraftwerk melody. I have X&Y, which is a decent album, but I find I don't listen to it that often. Usually I'll just pop on "Talk" once in a while. I'd like to hear some sort of remix that combines Talk and Computer Love (I hate to say "mashup", because a lot of them are really bad). Otherwise, yeah, they can a little too big for their britches sometimes. The bombastic rock sound is a little too similar to newer U2. I'll remember their name 20 years from now, but for some odd reason, think that Editors' and Interpol's music will age better. Either of those bands get my vote over Coldplay. Right now it's Editors, really digging their albums (thanks Blir).

White Stripes - on my Top 10 Most Overrated Bands Ever list. Just don't get them.

rotator: Dane Cook = Richard Pryor? Heh, it's a sad state of affairs if Dane Cook is today's generation's Pryor!
