Belgium: King of Beers

I won't lie. I do love alot of those European beers. And Belgium knows what they're doing. I was never a big fan of Budweiser but even I can see the tragedy in one of America's most iconic and historical brands being sold to an overseas company.

Belgium bastards, first they inflict us with Jean-Claude Van Damme's acting now they purchase an American legend. I can at least give them credit for inventing french fries and waffles.

Wondering if they will change the beer making process, switching over to way european beers are made? and I guess no more of those crazy commercials[:o)]!

I love Belgian beers (especially Belgian white ales) and I do not like Budweiser at all but...
it disturbs me that an American institution like Anheiser Busch is being bought by foreign owners.


We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

I'm sure the new owners can allay everyone's discomfort by dedicating the next Real Men of Genius commercial to Mr. Foreign Buyer of an American Icon. Then everyone will see that he's just a guy who really likes Bud Light. Nothing wrong with that, right?

I love Stella. I used to think I was cool -- on the cutting edge by drinking it. Now it's mass made (I think in the states)...,


I still like the taste of it though - even though they are part of the Bud family now.

One can oly hope so, then mayby I'll have a Bud once in a while; however, I doubt it, even South African Brewing (SAB) didn't make Miller any better when they bought it 5 years ago from PhillipMorris... [xx(]

The shift to foreign ownership of formerly American companies and property seems to have been propelling steadily forward for the past quarter century.

InterBrew bought up Labatt's in Canada years ago, hasn't changed things much.

One interesting thing from this deal. 1987 - Labatt's bought Latrobe Brewery (Rolling Rock). 1995 - Purchased by AmBev, later to become InBev. 2006 - InBev sells Rolling Rock to A-B. 2008 InBev buys A-B.

I doubt consolidation in the beer industry is going to shape things for the better. I'm definitely getting pissed off by so many of the supposed imported brands being brewed and bottled in the US and Canada. And the six pack price usually remains high. For example:

Asahi Japanese Beer - brewed by Molson in Toronto
Kirin Japanese Beer - brewed by Anheuser Busch in California
Carlsberg Danish Beer - brewed by Labatt's in Toronto
etc.

Next time you purchase 'imported' beer, make sure it's actually imported from the main brewery instead of Canada or the US. It usually makes a big difference in taste.

Actually Carlsberg in Canada went from Labatt's to it's own distribution in Canada. For a couple of years it has been brewed by Moosehead. Earlier this year local production was stopped, it's brands are now fully imported to Canada. From their website:

"Carlsberg Canada established its own sales force in January 2007 and now handles marketing and sales of Tuborg, Tetley’s and other imported speciality Group brands across Canada. In early 2008 local production of Carlsberg was halted and the brand is now fully imported from Europe along with the Tuborg, Kronenbourg, Tetley's, Baltika and Okocim brands."

It has taken some time for Unibroue beers from Quebec to reach the west coast of Canada, but let me say they are the best thing to come out of La Belle Province since...well...OK, they are the best thing to come out of Quebec, ever. These are high cost, hand crafted beers, and worth every penny.

Their "La Fin du Monde" is amazing, and is a whopping 9% alcohol. It is made by triple fermentation and a unique way of straining the yeast.

For the summer, their Blanche de Chambly is a delicious white ale.

This is how beer is supposed to taste. God, I am thirsty now.
