As Cynical as I am [}:)]. Kicking A__ for Me, Means the Band(s) still get's airplay, decent on the charts, sold out stadiums not theater size venues or country club, still commands the shot, Huge underground cult following & lastly sell, sell & sell records.. Obviously Depeche Mode, The Cure and ofcourse U2 are still doin'(very well) it...

The rest of the 80's New wave thingie's. Mostly are obscure & out of fashion [:o)]

To me it is mostly measured by the MUSIC they make. Is it still "vital"- energetic, present, dynamic and exciting or does it sound tired, stale and played out?

This is a subjective measurement to be sure but I am glad to report that IMHO many, many 80's artists are still putting out vital, ass kicking music.

Back in the day, did we give a f**k if the band was selling out stadiums, climbing the charts or getting mainstream airplay? The first time you heard (insert favorite 80s artist here), did you decide if you liked the song based on album sales, tour grosses or whether Top 40 radio was playing it?

Hell, no!

As long as the music was good, that was all that mattered. For me, this axiom remains a constant to this day. And if the band wasn't on the charts, mainstream radio or in stadiums, that was considered a PLUS!

I can't believe nobody mentioned them (unless I missed it) but how about Sparks? Their last album "Hello Young Lovers" was phenomenal (with the first track "Dick Around" being my favorite song so far this decade), they have a new album coming out in a few weeks (heard the first single "Good Morning", it's fantastic). And to top it off, in a few weeks they're going to do a 21-night set in London where they're going to play all 21 of their albums in their entirety (a different album each night). How many bands that have been around 30+ years can say they can play their ENTIRE repertoire??? Ass-kicking for sure.
