It goes way beyond regional conflicts and ancient rivalries. You only wish it were that non-threatening.
* When British police are afraid to use unclothed dogs in their ops because Muslims see the animals as unclean,
* when a British court says that Muslim communities may utilize Sharia law when deciding matters of divorce and such,
* when a Danish cartoonist is in fear for his life because he had the audacity to portray Muhamed in a negative way (and is even facing some problems from his own gov't as a result),
* when France has riots by huge numbers of Islamic immigrants (yes, other people riot too, but that doesn't negate the overall trend being described here),
* when it takes a "torturous" interrogation method like waterboarding to break Khalid Sheik Muhamed to reveal -- and thwart -- a plot to destroy TEN passenger flights leaving Heathrow Airport in 2006,
* when nearly 200 people are killed in a Spanish train bombing,
* when nearly 200 are killed in a Balinese night club,
* when over 200 are killed in African embassy blasts,
* when Muslims are taking advantage of the weakened states of some African nations to establish their Taliban-like control over those people,
* when China is having problems with Muslim rebels,
* when Russia lost 300 people -- including 150 children -- in a Muslim hostage-taking incident,
* when we in our own great United States witness in 1993 an attempt to destroy the WTC, and then in 2001 witness the total fruition of that goal,
* when 50+ people are killed in London subway blasts,
* when the Philippines have to enlist American help to fend off the imperial advances of Abu Sayef,
* when American schools are allowed by our courts to have Muslim role-playing that includes adopting a Muslim name, learning the Koran and learning AND RECITING Muslim prayers while a Catholic priest cannot even serve kids pizza during a lunch hour,
* when a San Diego public school allows 100 Muslim kids 15 mins of prayer in the middle of the school day on school grounds,
* when Imam after Imam, jihadist after jihadist says that the infidel -- including ALL non-Muslims as well as moderate Muslims, and this also includes Christians, Jews, atheists, Buddhists (remember the huge Buddhist statue that the Taliban destroyed in Afghanistan earlier this decade?), Wiccans, Hindus, etc. DESERVE to die, wherever they are...
...any reasonable person can see that this isn't some little, overblown threat and that it is totally globalized. They see the west as morally weak, as a great big paper tiger. And so far, they're partly right. You can go on believing that this is just fear-mongering by the satanic Bush administration, but this has been happening since the days of the hyper-liberal Jimmy Carter. You can say it's politicized and exaggerated just to keep us in fear, or you can look at the history of the past 30 years and realize that it's anything but. I however will be very mindful of the increasing pressure they're exerting on supposedly secular democracies to allow them special room and privileges, which is starting to resemble a soft takeover.
If you do anything, do not make this mistake: just because they're decentralized does not mean they're not a threat. They may not have one central command, but they do have a central ideology -- the violent and aggressive interpretation of the Koran. And their decentralized nature actually makes them that much more difficult to defeat. There may be different sects, but the imperial strain is in all of them. I have little doubt that if they, hypothetically speaking, ever did get control of the world, they would surely fight amongst themselves, as we see in Palestine, Iraq, etc. But that does not negate the fact that right now, they have a common scapegoat -- you and I.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.
