Worst New Wave Letdown

What's your worst New Wave letdown- a "say it isn't so" moment that left you utterly disappointed?

Although I wasn't a huge fan, The Clash calling it quits really caught me off guard. I thought these spearheads for the New Wave Generation would continue to create vital music for years to come. Instead we got stuck with B.A.D.

Other notable letdowns:

The Police disbanding at the height of their popularity. The Knack's dreadful second album and subsequent failure to reascend the lofty heights they initially attained so easily. Billy Idol's attempt to morph from Punk's snarlingest frontman to a dreadlocked "Cyber Rocker". KROQ's abandoning the format that made them "world famous" in favor of Grunge and Metal Rap.

After putting out one of favorites of all time "Pleasure Victim" and then following it up with another solid release "Love Life" Berlin drops "Count Three And Pray" with the single "Take My Breath Away" ugh! Then they disband without an attempt to make up for this. Although they did do bands reunited on VH-1 a few years back.

Weller breaking up The Jam to go sing crap that Americans had already been doing for 30 years.

Honorable mention:

Simple Minds going to shit after New Gold Dream, though in retrospect, as much as I loved that album, its style probably signaled the beginning of the end.

Wall of Voodoo:

Stan Ridgway and Joe Nanini left after Call of the West and band continued on with Andy Priebody and Ned Lukhardt (spelling?). Although Seven Days in Sammystown was pretty decent, the rest of their output was pretty dire. Happy Planet was a total waste of vinyl.

Mexican Radio was pretty cool when it was released but turned them into a novelty band signaling the end of Wall of Voodoo. I realize that Wall of Voodoo was never going to reach the heights of say, The Clash but I figured if they could have hung in there, they might have had a couple of more decent releases that is up until Marc Moreland died.

Seeing Morrissey in 1991. He was onstage for an hour and didn't perform one Smiths tune. I wasn't the only one in the crowd who felt ripped off.

When U2 released american rock/blues inspired music: Angel of Harlem, Desire, When Love comes to town...It was mostly down hill after that.

-New Target (?) commericial where they show current teens in a "Breakfast Club" situation ---one scene with girl wearing 'Nirvana' shirt (do these kids have NO ideas of their own?!?)

[/quote]Saw this commercial at the theatre last night before Hellboy, told the wife if this advertising was intended for teens they probably missed the mark considering most have probably not seen the movie and don't get the reference. If it was aimed at 40+ year olds in some way I quess it worked since it is being mentioned.

it's still fucking lame ---my opinion is that kids should be listening to Drill & Bass, not Coldplay or The Editors or Nirvan or Simple Minds "Dont You Forget About Me"

For me it would of been the Pale Fountains going from an album with wall to wall great tracks, Pacific Street, to an album with virtually no great tracks From Across The Kitchen Table.

are you referring to the Style Council or his later solo stuff? If it's the former I'd like to know which Americans were doing this stuff.

every teen (nieces, my friends kids etc) I know have seen EVERY John Hughes film ever made. many times. again --I don't think they have anything good and real of their own so they are just sold what was good and real.

The Cars' [i]Heartbeat City[/i]. Should have seen it coming with [i]Shake It Up[/i], but they were definitely not the rock n roll new wave band they started out as.
