Another one flees the Bunny patch.
The latest high-profile act to sever ties with Warner Music Group is Depeche Mode.

The veteran English band is managed by Jonathan Kessler, who brought them to Mute Records in 1980, while in the States the band has been on Sire/WB since that time.

Outside the U.S., Depeche has been with EMI since it acquired Mute in 2002, and the group continues to sell records and do big business on the road, especially in Europe, but the principals decided to sever ties with Warner domestically after concluding that they’d been under-served by the Tom Whalley regime.

Depeche now joins a prestigious crew of defectors that includes AC/DC, the Eagles, Jewel, Madonna and, most recently, Nickelback, leading many to wonder who will be the next major act to exit stage right.

Good for them. The record companies seem to be a necessary evil anyway, and with internet distribution being what it is nowadays, I have to wonder just how necessary an evil.

I'm surprised it's taken them this long? Martin has his own label, doesnt he? if not, he and the DM boys are smart enough to create one, and put stuff out on their own label?

It's Fletch with the Toast Hawaii label. It would be cool if they released music under Toast Hawaii. Might be cooler if they created their own label with equal ownership amongst them although Mute USA does have a nice ring to it. Would Daniel Miller be up to the challenge?

I can understand some of these folks not realizing if Mute USA exists...even many of the folks over at EMI, who distributes the label, don't know anything.

I work for an audio/video distributor and was looking for info from our contacts over at EMI in Hollywood....I requested info on the Yazoo/Yaz box months ago they kept telling me to check with our reps at WEA because the Yaz reissues were 'not ours' (ie: EMI). So, once the information was released that EMI was releasing the box in the US under the Yaz name, I requested info from our friendly reps at the label again, who told me to check with WEA cuz it wasn't coming out on EMI! When we physically showed them the EMI sell sheet on the Yaz box they said they would have to 'look into it'.

Of course, EMI released the Yaz box and are happily making money while I'm still awaiting an answer....but that's the record biz for you. People who don't care are in charge while the people who do care are being kicked to the curb...
