Worst New Wave Letdown

When Duran Duran put out that drek "A View To a Kill". OMG, that was unlistenable and not new wave at all, altho DD had been sliding away from new wave for quite some time prior to that. "View" was like a horrible car crash.

I generally agree with most of your comments up above, as well.

Duran Duran ends at 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' for me, and even that albums has it's weak spots. Off the album 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' I like "The Reflex" and I know most diehard DD fans dislike the tune. I also love "New Moon On Monday" and "I Take The Dice." While I can tolerate a few tracks post-Tiger, most songs make me ill. "All She Wants Is" is utter crap and don't even get me started on "Skin Trade"

So many mentioned already, but one that got me was The Woodentops "Wooden Footcops on the Highway". The material before that album was top rate.

How about Wire's "Manscape"? Although that's hardly early 80's material.

The Cult's gradual decline following "Love". Although they had some good rockers after that, they eventually morphed into an awful version of grunge. I hear the new album is a bit of a return, but I just don't have the desire to check it out.

As much as I agree with some of the above listed "letdowns", I do get a kick out of how many others I still enjoy listening to! The Style Council, "Heartbeat City", "Echo & The Bunnymen", "Midnight To Midnight", "Rattle and Hum", some mid-period Duran Duran...they ain't perfect, but they all have some really good songs if you get past the radio hits. Examples for me: Style Council "The Cost of Loving" (title track), The Cars "Heartbeat City" (title track), Echo and The Bunnymen "Bomber's Bay", U2 "Heartland", and of few of the non-hits on "Seven and The Ragged Tiger".

Hmm.. Since no one has mentioned it yet, I would say that Ministry's abrupt change of musical style after 'Twitch' was, shall we say.. a tad jarring? [xx(]

P.S. And of course, my personal NW low point was on Thursday December 17, 1987 when Elton Spitzer's WLIR broadcast run came to an abrupt end.[V]

here are some that stick out in my mind

when KNAC 105.5 went heavy metal around 1985

I also remember when the Cure, the Smiths, and Depeche Mode hit it big around 1985 (in particular People are People,How Soon is Now, and In Between Days), everyone was into them all of a sudden
same when U2 released the Joshua Tree a few years later
I just think the record labels pushed many of the greta bands into commercial sucessed while they compromised most of their originality

Every band that I loved broke up/stopped touring late 1982-early 1983, when I was 15-16 and hadn't seen any of them live yet.

The Jam broke up (though I got to see Weller do Jam tunes later)

Roxy Music ceased (saw them twice on their reunion a few years back )

Elvis Costello ditched the Attractions (saw them together in '86)

English Beat broke up (saw General Public and Wakeling doing Beat songs later)

XTC stopped touring (got to meet them three times at record store signings, still waiting to see them LIVE)

Squeeze went to just "Difford & Tilbrook" (but I've seen them a dozen times since)

The Clash broke up (saw a B.A.D. show with Joe Strummer in the audience, but he never got on stage with Mick)

So I'd have to say 1982-83!

A Flock of Seagulls' album "Dream Come True". I loved their first 3 albums, but without Paul Reynolds their fourth album was just garbage.

I have to agree with you, this 2 albums shows w/o Alan Wilder DM they lost a huge part of there cult sound.. Ultra was the most anticipated Album post Gahan's Suicide attempt and I find that album too dark & mellow.. Exciter was just "WTF" Dream on?? nothing to excite about that album but just the tour..

Looking forward for DM's album nextyear! Hopefully will be as good or better than PTA.

Although I wasn't a huge fan, The Clash calling it quits really caught me off guard. I thought these spearheads for the New Wave Generation would continue to create vital music for years to come. Instead we got stuck with B.A.D.

Other notable letdowns:

The Police disbanding at the height of their popularity. The Knack's dreadful second album and subsequent failure to reascend the lofty heights they initially attained so easily. Billy Idol's attempt to morph from Punk's snarlingest frontman to a dreadlocked "Cyber Rocker". KROQ's abandoning the format that made them "world famous" in favor of Grunge and Metal Rap.

I think calling the Knack's second album "dreadful" is a little harsh. It's not as good as "Get the Knack" by any means, but it has grown on me over the years. As for their later albums, I think there are good tracks on all of them, especially "Zoom" but very little in the way of promotion after "Rocket O' Love" in 1991.
