WLIR reception ?

Was it difficult to hear this station? The New York market covers a lot of territory and WLIR was sandwiched between to full power NY stations at 92.3 and 93.1.
Unless you lived close to the transmitter in L.I. I would assume you would need a better than average radio/tuner or antenna to pick it up.

WLIR definitely did not have a very large coverage 'sweet spot'[B)]

...and if you think the 92.7LIR coverage area was bad, get a load of the current 107.1LIR area in eastern Suffolk. It's horrendous. It's of no matter though since it simulcasts ESPN Sports radio these days. As an alt station, it died just before the new '08 year.

As an ex-airliner at WLIR, I can attest to getting calls as far away as Stamford, CT, Ft. Lee, NJ and well out East in Suffolk, so that map is the primary area, but it did reach further.

I remember dicey reception in Manhattan, when we were driving around, but heard Manhattanites rigging antennas to pick it up fine. The tower was at North Shore Towers on the Queens-Nassau border.

There was actually a second dial location they used in the CT & MA area, towards the end of WDRE then back to WLIR.

The station was crystal clear in the Fairfield County area.

I was able to get reception in Trumbull, CT. Not perfect, but listenable.

The "hard to get" thing was a part of their marketing to advertisers when it switched to WDRE. The other take on "hard to get" (desirable), that is.

I grew up in the Northwest Bronx and got them just fine - with a little tin foil on the antenna, anyway. [;)]

Hey ebbhead me too. I grew up in the Bronx. I practically had to have my antenna out the window, and forget it when an airplane flew over head

I would spend hours rigging my antenna to receive the 92.7 frequency when I lived in Brooklyn. It wasn't easy.
