These "letdowns" are pretty much it:

Sex Pistols cancelling their 1st date on their US tour
(Leona Theatre which was 2 short miles away) because of
delays in getting their visas.

XTC cancelling their tour 2 weeks before they play CMU in '82.

Two unreleased The The albums (when they ever see the light
of day, I will no longer care or desire to obtain them).

Propaganda's follow up to A Secret Wish, 1234.

Numerous times I was in LA, or Las Vegas and Echo & the Bunnymen
were scheduled to play the day after I left.

Depeche Mode SOFAD album, jumping on the grunge banwagon.
Played it once, but I bought all the 12" and CD singles.

I don't understand your Thompson Twins quote. "Future Days" sounds pretty close to their previous efforts AND was only made in 1985!

They were possibly the most commercial band of the era, milking it for all it was worth. There first album "A Product Of..." was their least commercial release.

As a huge DM fan, I would have to disagree on SOFAD as a Grunge wannabe album.. First of all, Grunge is all out Distortion Guitars Angst yelling.. You don't hear any of that on SOFAD.

I think what dissapoints die-hard DM/New Wave fans is they abandon there Synth Electronic sound and went experimental with that Gospel Dirty Electronic Industrial Blues(?) I feel You is one dark Blues track, Condemnation is sort of a Gospel song. Judas, Walking in my Shoes, Higher love what sound are those???? it's not grunge.

Fans expected them to make Violator II, I can't name any other Album that Sounded like SOFAD. that album alone was one of a kind. Innovative but it's not New Wave/Violator II.
