Contemporary "New Wave"

What do y'all think of some of the stuff being passed off as alternative today? I think much of it is annoying. I don't like the vocalizations (they tend to be youngish males who do this up and down thing with their singing in what seems like every other song), the chords, the whiny, incessant screaming and the commercialized sound. Groups like Blink 182 or MCR or those sell-outs Green Day irritate me. But there are bands that have come out this new century that I think would have been successful in the 80s, groups like

* A Place to Bury Strangers

* Ladytron

* She Wants Revenge

* Scapesonik

* Provision

* Mesh

* Assemblage 23

* The Cruxshadows (altho these guys have been around since the early 90s)

* I Satellite

* Iris

* Midnight Movies

* Orgy

This is very much the primary gripe of what I don't like today. If they'd just alter that type of singing and turned up the melody a bit, I think there'd be a ton more bands than I like already. Bands like Cap Your Hands Say Yeah nail the bad things you mention spot on. In general, I have wanted to like them because there's hints fo the styles I like in their music. As soon as the vocals start though and soon as the chords keep hammering on without the hooks or variety to keep my attention, I just go "Jeez, I wish they'd done that song better."

I keep a very large Alt 2000s playlist then a 2000s Favs playlist of things I absolutely want to hear when I jump in the car or something. I was really surprised how small that latter is currently. I further noticed that what's in that folder tends to be the more melodic/rhythmic stuff or driving or soaring guitar hooks. And when I do sample from bands that otherwise don't keep my attention, it's definitely a song that minimizes the annoying traits ("In This Home of Ice" for example from Clap rather than a more popular song).

Just recently as I was making those Name That Tune games, I noticed how amazingly many and incredible hooks we were blessed with back in the day. I think people have forgotten about the hook...or buried it so much with bombast and the souped-up levels on the production that you just don't want to listen to the song anymore.
