It's definitely not STAGE,i know this song and also we can eliminate
Hot House - "Don't come to stay" 1986 and Blue Lazer - Stay Away From Her,for sure.

I can also say you can rule out "Honeymoon Suite". I have all 5 of their albums from 1984-2001 and the song they have with stay in the title is "Stay In the Light" -- and it's definately not that song. His voice is quite different than the sound clip posted as well.

I have the songs by The Truth (Second Time Lucky) and it's not the one we're looking for. I think it was not eliminated yet.

shame Michael Zoeller has never written back - has anyone ever tried to email Ecki Stieg that snippet?
