Help! 11 mystery songs from an old tape sent to me

Help! 11 mystery songs from an old tape sent to me

Postby MikeP » Wed Aug 06, 2008 8:25 am

Hey gang,

I've been archiving my tapes and I came across some lost tunes that were sent to me around 10 years ago in hopes I could ID them. I'm forgetting just who sent them -- probably a current board member(!) -- but they appear to be taped from WHSF in Bethesda, MD (you'll hear a station ID on one clip) back in the mid '80s. I only had success with half the songs on the tape. Here are the remaining unknown songs that I'm hoping you can help with. Most of them are post-punk or power pop.

UPDATE: I'm adding the identified songs as they come in.

<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown1.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 1</a> <span style="color:red"> <- "9 O'Clock" by Hi-Fi</span>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown2.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 2</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown3.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 3</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown4.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 4</a> (like this one a lot) <span style="color:red"> <- "No Regrets (1982 Version?)" by Actuel</span>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown5.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 5</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown6.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 6</a> <span style="color:red"> <- "More Than Curious" by Peter Case</span>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown7.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 7</a> (sounds like Translator) <span style="color:red"> <- "Hold On" by True West</span>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown8.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 8</a> (sounds like Stiv Bators) <span style="color:red"> <- "The Longest Day" by Del Fuegos</span>

<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown9.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 9</a> (sounds a bit like early Bangles)
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown10.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 10</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Unknown11.mp3" target="new">Mystery Tune 11</a> (same artist as 10? -- sounds like Holly Beth Vincent)

And here are some bonus snippets of cool stuff I hadn't heard until this tape came along:

<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Fad Gadget - Wheels of Fortune.mp3" target="new">Fad Gadget - Wheels of Fortune</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Gist - Love at First Sight.mp3" target="new">The Gist - Love at First Sight</a> (Stuart Moxham's post-Young Marble Giants project -- sounds a bit like The Mood)
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/John Cale - Hungry for Love.mp3" target="new">John Cale - Hungry for Love</a>
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Robyn Hitchcock - 52 Stations.mp3" target="new">Robyn Hitchcock - Fifty Two Stations</a> (excellent early solo stuff)
<a href="/samples/mystery_tunes/Velvet Monkeys - Drive-in Tonight.mp3" target="new">Velvet Monkeys - Let's Go to the Drive-in Tonight</a> (groovy!)

#1 is the band Hi-Fi with "9-O'clock" from Hi-Fi, Demonstration Record EP, SP & S Records, Seattle.
Coincidentally I just bought this from a Tacoma record store in the last 3 months.
Glad I could help.

Track # 4 is by ACTUEL - circa 1984.....the song is called "No Regrets" and it can be found on their "Monuments" LP. The radio version you posted sounds like a slightly different / maybe earlier version. Great song!

Thanks for the i.d. Ocean! I noticed there is an earlier single/EP from Actuel for "Things": http://www.discogs.com/release/1427547 which contains "No Regrets". It's from '82 vs. '84 for the LP so it's likely an earlier incarnation.

I'll have to add this to my list of vinyl to hunt down.

Unfortunately I'm no help. I loved #3 though. I really wanna know what that is.

Also, I'm pretty positive #10 is not Holly Beth Vincent. It's just too polished and not raw enough to be her. I'm not convinced 10 and 11 are the same artist.
