I clung to remnants of "new wave" still coming out, and from there slowly morphed into a rocker, Headbangers Ball stuff. But hey! You always come home, and here I am.

"Oh look at me I'm covered in punk, covered in new wave, covered in You..."

For me, I was starting to move on as early as 1984 thanks to a couple of friends who are into the Underground as well as a Canadian late night radio show (Brave New Waves I think it was called) which introduced me to many bands including Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Cocteau Twins, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Once my introduction to the sounds of The Jesus and Mary Chain in 1985 happened, it was time to find out more and hear what was happening. Once I found myself buying 12" singles by The Chameleons and albums by Stiff Little Fingers as well as getting into bands like Joy Division in my Early Teen years around 1983-4, the feeling that I was not a passive listener was confirmed.

I kept what I considered sounds that were essential to me through my Early Teen years, including Soft Cell, and adding on bands I finally had a chance to bring into the collection as I finally could go on my own. Along with the aforementioned, This included the Punk bands like The Damned, singers like Julian Cope (Already into Teardrop Explodes, I was introduced to his music through the Fried album) and Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget), some Hardcore as I had a couple of friends that were into going to shows, more experimental sounds including Einstürzende Neubauten and Psychic TV, and the occasional straight-ahead band like The Godfathers who kept it solid and sharp.

As for all the music to dance to, I never really went to clubs although the sounds connected to EBM and Industrial (Front 242 and others) were a good soundtrack to driving. My B-Movie Video rental sprees led to the Music sections of the better video stores with some Punk films that caught the action of the early days. With a huge interest in Garage Punk, thanks to re-issues of many great records and the Nuggets style compilations that were happening at the time, the picture is almost complete.

the 80's/early 90's music is like an ocean full of bands that are
great and worthy to listen to.(in my opinion)mainstream pop,
uk music, euro disco(don't laugh)heavy metal and early alternative,
punk/ska, reggae (sounds great to me then and still great today)...looking back all these years i'm very lucky that these are the music i've grown up with.even though i'm here in the island my
thoughts are attuned to the rest of the world in expressing their love for new wave music.(the music of the thinking man)

I liked some "happy" bands like Poi Dog Pondering and the Judybats whose careers took nosedives with the onset of "Grunge" a few years later.

When 1988 came, I stopped going to the Nectarine Ballroom
and perusing the big import bins at Schoolkid's with my DJ friend's suggestions in my head. It was frustrating to hear music- gasp. With NO LYRICS! Just pounding beats. POUND POUND POUND POUND. I guess
that was all right for the new acid crowd. But not poor disappointed me.
I remember thinking stalwarts like 'Information Society' and "The Other Ones" were just imitations. I was insulted at the time! Now I realize they were just trying to keep that New Wave Vampire Synth sound alive!
Argh. Poor us. It looked like the normals were winning when grunge came along and it was proclaimed the new cool thing in the early 90's.
I had nothing to do with that stuff. Apparently there was some kind of contingency out there in our area that felt the same way, as 89X did a continuing weekly 'Homesick Night' show on Sundays that I taped (still have the tapes!) that played all the old new wave stuff.
So what music did I turn to? I turned back to my old new wave and Euro Dance stuff. My other half thought I was a relic. Now he just thinks I'm cool since he got to meet Howard Jones in person with me last year!!!

Ha ha
