Presidental Election Signs

I see very few McCain/Palin signs or bumber stickers around here. Perhaps so no one bothers because it's a foregone conclusion that my state will go Republican. The Democratic minority definitely puts up way more signs and bumper stickers.

In the Bay Area, you mainly see Obama/Biden signs--and in bunches, especially on cars. Coming a distant second . . . Nader/Gonzalez competes with Ron Paul signs.

True enough...apparently banning gay marriage--as recognized by the State--is the most pressing issue on the minds of these folks. Nevermind the economy or alternative energy. Seemingly bottomless funding pouring in from sources outside California like Colorado Springs' fine, upstanding Focus on the Family, where soliciting gay prostitution is by far and wide preferred over allowing them types to marry. Hey, maybe FotF and their ilk will actually have a few nickels left over to help out the local charities and soup kitchens![xx(]

States rights are the biggest joke ever told by the Republican Party. They don't believe in them any more than they believe in smaller government and less spending. At the most, these days states rights seems like a concept to confuse people. After all, there are no states rights for people who use medical pot even though it is the will of many states - only a slippery slope that the government is spraying more water on. It will be the same for non-traditional unions. A solution that leaves real, loving people in unreal circumstances is no real solution.

Is it the most important issue of our times? No, it shouldn't be an issue at all. It should be a no-brainer that people in a committed union should have the same rights and be able to use the same nomenclature to describe their relationship as anyone else. The courts here in California have ruled that it is unconstitutional to ban gay marriage and the effort now (prop 8 in California) is to change our state constitution to make gay marriage forever illegal in California, not just reconsider the peoples' will.

There is never a bad time, and it is never waste of time, or a poor use of time to protect the rights of the rightless in a society based on freedom for the individual. American's have battled for freedom many times and in many places. This is just another battle for individual freedom in America! Many people still consider individual freedom to be our birth right. Many people are still fighting for individual rights and human dignity in a country where they are supposed to be granted to all.

Free is free, isn't it? My wife and I think so.

Here, here! I wholeheartedly agree, yet it's astounding what so-called freedom-loving, patriotic folk here in the OC think qualifies as such. The youth in my neighborhood--many who aren't even old enough to vote--are overwhelmingly in support of gay marriage, hence they oppose Proposition 8. It's obvious that if this prop passes, it will only last so long, so why prolong the inevitable, right? That's a goddamned no-brainer as well.

I know what you mean, Mike and I have had the same thought. I agree that it is a no-brainer that if prop 8 passes it won't last forever. But the downside is that it will take time and money to change and the same out of state dollars will be there again to pervert our state processes. And what about the marriages that have already taken place?

It just seems to me to be best to nip it in the bud now.

Btw, we attended our first gay marriage last month. It was part of a huge samba party that happens twice a year in Golden Gate Park (the party host was one of the grooms). As it was happening I couldn't help but laugh to myself about how the religious right would react to this event. It's well known they are largly against the marriage itself but how do you think they would feel about the officiant being a Condomble Priestess? LOL!
