Make the Toyota 'Saved by Zero' commercials stop!

I hate this damn commercial too. I basically just mute the TV every time it comes on, which is like what? Three times during each commercial break. As long as I don't have to hear it the song isn't ruined for me.

I believe this is the second time over the past several years Toyota has used this for one of their promotions (last time it was a different version). It's good for the band, but annoying for me, as a huge Fixx fan. Normally, I can skip this crap with my DVR, but I'm a slave to live TV when watching sports, and that commercial seems to be played at every break, argh!

No, the band doesn't have a say in it since they are not using the original recording, and I don't believe the bands owns their publishing. Cy posted about this on their website a while ago; he basically said that they had no say, he never had cars in mind when writing the song, but the money does "help keep the lights on" (not his exact quote).

I am pretty much over getting upset over hearing songs I like in commercials. This does have an occasional good effect. I was substituting in a first grade class the other day, and a student was singing Saved By Zero. I asked if he heard it in a commercial, and he said yes. I also think that exposure of a song in commercials can help sell albums. I purchases a Bif Naked album solely on hearing a song from it in a car commercial.

Interesting topic, I am actually intrigued about Yello's upcoming release due to their involvement with the Audi promotions. Musicians are entertainers to the majority but heck they have to make a living so who can fault them for making some money off their work.

I thought you cant get royalties if the company isnt using the original song. I heard something of the same thing where the producers of Donnie Darko wasnt able to secure the rights without having to pay a hefty sum for using the original Mad World song so they had Gary Jules record it

Well, they won't get performance royalties because the commercial doesn't feature the original recording. However, they will get publishing royalties since Toyota is using a song that The Fixx composed. The record companies are not involved in songwriting royalties; it's usually associations such as BMI or ASCAP.

Well, nothing is more annoying to me than the "freecreditreport.com" ads. I hate that smug singer and his cheesy songs and nasally voice.

But I hope the Toyota ads end soon only so that my boys in The Fixx don't get bashed or hated any more. They deserve the royalties but not the hate!
