With Fred gone, and First Wave being what it is--

I guess it's up to load our collections on personal online radio stations on the Web such as www.mediamaster.com

Only down side is that most Itunes purchases will not play due to copyright/patent restrictions, etc. But fortunately most of my collection was on disc, or traded on disc, etc.

I'm so happy to have found a bunch of other disgruntled Fred fans who are pissed off about the Sirius 1st Wave takeover. 1st Wave sucks! I've listened to this station all day today and they've played three Tears for Fears song and four Smiths songs. Within a two hour period. That's sheer madness!! No punk, post-punk or obscure stuff. Just overplayed hits. The first time I tuned into Fred on Direct TV, they were playing The English Beat's "Mirror in the Bathroom", later that night they played Gang of Four's "Damaged Goods", Talking Heads' "Crosseyed and Painless", "The Space Between" by Roxy Music and Devo's "Big Mess", "Wild Sex" by Oingo Boingo. And this was just the first night! Not to mention the Hoodoo Gurus Midnight Oil (other than "Beds are Burning".), Television (yes!), and really rare stuff like the Passion Puppets "Like Dust". Fred was grown folks alternative. Needless to say, I thought I found the station I've been craving for for years! I'm tempted to get rid of my cable and do what every one else here is doing...listen to my albums and ipod.

I've been a Sirius sub since 2005, and I can say that the honeymoon was over fairly quickly with 1st Wave. At first, I just loved the idea of having a classic alternative station at all (esp. w/no commercials), but their playlist is so shallow, it's disappointing. The Sunday night show, Dark Wave, was a bigger joke (is it even on any more?). In a 3-hour span on any given Sunday, you would hear 3 Cure songs (one per hour), 2 Cult songs, 3 Mode songs, The Smiths (!) AND Morrissey in the same hour, and most of the material could hardly be considered 'dark'. Sad thing was that Dark Wave was the only time you could hear The Chameleons ("Swamp Thing") and Cocteau Twins.

There are so many good NW bands that get ignored on that channel, Sirius just needs to create a separate 'obscure 80s' channel to satisfy us. I was hoping that Fred would replace 1st Wave w/the merger, or at least be a second option (why not, there are multiple country, rock, rap, and faith stations).

Definitely agree with the previous post. FirstWave's playlist is very limited and poses no surprises at all.
I'm disappointed with it; it has a lot of veteran DJs who I thought would have contributed alot to the playlist. They're underutilized. Betweeen The Duck (from LIR), Swedish Egil (KROQ), and the others, this station really should have it all covered. (obscure, alternate versions, remixes, live versions, etc)

First Wave needs a playlist that goes as deep as something like RadioNigel.com. Now THAT's a vast playlist. Just another 2 cents.

FYI, the on-air DJ's on Sirius do NOT pick the music they play. They just voice the host segments.

If what I'm reading here is true, then I am saddened.

A year ago, I got a 2-3 hour taste of First Wave at a coffee shop, and loved it. They were playing nothing but obscure tracks, from bands like Pylon, etc. I recognized about 80% of it. But after the merger, it's playing mainstream 80s? Disappointing.

Comcast's "retro-active" has a mixture of 60% tired 80s, 40% obscure.

Flashback alterantives would rock if they got rid of everything made after '85.

I'd just like to add my voice to the fact that this change blows chunks. I get XM through my Direct TV service, and currently have a 'trial' that came with my car, and about the only thing that was making me consider getting the service was Fred. First wave is barely different that 80's on 8.

Any updates on "1st Wave"? Has it gotten any better? I was curious to see if a large number of complaints might cause them to reevaluate their playlist. I usually listen in the afternoons.....some bloke named "Iron Eagle" or whatnot.....WEAK.

Anyway, I've made my way back to Flashback Alternatives which is pretty good. The sound is actually less compressed than SATRAD, and I can stream it to my receiver. It is listener-driven, which can be a double-edged sword. I liked the mix that Fred used to play, and frequently heard a number of great songs I had either forgotten, or never heard back in the day. It was a deep playlist with very little repetition.

Anyway, just curious how other FFFs (Former Fred Fans) are coping....

again; First wave has/was always been terrible ---Im sure Fred wasnt too far away.

that being said, whatever Sirius's "Spa" was (actually I guess its still called 'SPA'), got better because of joining with XM,it changed quite a bit---- I hear Eno, cocteau twins, jean michelle jarre --- more progressive stuff than just 'spa type sounds' (read: elevator music)

I'm not surprised to be reading all this. 3 years ago I had Sirius in the office and I remember listening to First Wave every day. Back then they would play less mainstream stuff, but it was still the SAME stuff every day. Not a day went by that I didn't hear "Mirror in the Bathroom" "Romanticide" and "I Don't Like Mondays." Commercial radio, satellite or not, is shit basically.

I loved the First Wave Station at first but lately I've been noticing how lacking that station is.
That was when I started to become really interested in the obscure 80's stuff.
Also, has anyone ever noticed how they never play any Elvis Costello?
