Definitely when you compare their early punk/post punk work like "Pulse" and "We Love You" to later releases like "Heartbreak Beat".

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

An interesting topic.

As an aside, The Undertones always loathed being called new wave. Whatever you think of their music, they definitely came from punk and considered themselves part of it.

The Members too thought themselves part of the punk context, even if JC knew way too many chords.

The Skids are probably the best example posted, for me - their early work, 'Saints Are Coming' for example, are among the very best punk songs ever written. Therefafter they went into territory that was less easy to categorise.

Oh, and a note on The Jam - whatever is said about Weller's Mod affiliations, at the time they were definitely considered part of that punk generation - not that such a summary was without complications. If the Clash start writing songs about where you buy your clothes from, you're part of the dialogue. That said, I can definitely see the case for The Jam being considered non-punks. yet I struggle with the concept of them as a new wave band (remember that they were directly criticised at their outset for being 'revivalists' - ie prematurely 'old').

Very well said, Bad Penny. I couldn't agree more.

I think we could name 100 plus bands who would fit into both the punk and new wave categories, especially when reviewing a body of work covering as little as a few short years.

The first band that came to mind for me was The Boomtown Rats. Many of their early songs like "Lookin' After No. 1" were punk. Their later work fit the new wave label.

As I recall originally the term "new wave" was just a nice way of saying "punk". The term "new wave" was invented by certain people in the music industry who sought a more marketale term for punk rock once it showed signs of catching on with the record buying public. So The Ramones, The Pretenders and The Sex Pistols could correcrtly be called either new wave or punk. And for years The Ramones (considered by some to be the granfathers of punk) denied they were either; they claimed to be just a rock and roll band. It wasn't until years later that they embraced the punk label.

Here's two more to consider...

Wire could be included here - I could see that they have strong influence on New Wave bands, although clearly more with the more melodic moments than the experimentation that make Wire stand out, but they have also left a strong mark in Punk. While starting out in Punk with their first two albums, they wound up being one of the greatest bands of Post-Punk with a good amount of their work from 154 onward. At their best, they are a very adventurous band.

Stiff Little Fingers are a great Punk band especially with the first two albums, but some of their Early 80's songs could be recommended to be put into the best of New Wave, as the Go For It and Now Then... albums show. They may have sounded slick to a good amount of their original following, but they gave it a great shot ("Bits of Kids," "Listen," "Just Fade Away," "Touch and Go").

COPELAND saw it as a way to sell his brother's band, The Police, when they were
hanging on Cherry Vanilla's UK 'punk coat tails" as her support/backing band'
it was considered a mainstream antidote phrase to 'punk' which the american market had
alreasdy rejected
