I'd been avoiding TOTR. The last album grated on me at times. It sure seems to appear on a lot of year-end lists though. The few tracks I've heard do seem a bit more melodic.

I'm starting to see The Bug's "London Zoo" on some critics' year-end lists. Its really hard and twisted reggae/dub/dance beat thing is not really my cup of tea except in certain moods, but some folks around here might like the combo. It's on the Ninja Tune label, one of my favorites of the 90s, producing folks like Coldcut, 9 Lazy 9, The Herbalizer, etc.

Me Likes! VERY MUCH!

IMHO: This has turned out to be a very promising year indeed![8D]

Very cool reading Alf and very refreshing spin on what a personal 2008 list really would looke like. Plus, "the torrential unhappiness of joy"...brilliant!

Thanks. :)

You know, I gave Fleet Foxes one listen-through after my friend hyped it up, but it wasn't my cup o' joe at all.

My 10 favorite songs of 2008 (counted down Casey Kasem style):

10. Louis XIV: "Air Traffic Control"
9. Coldplay: "Viva La Vida" (horribly overexposed but still brilliant)
8. Amanda Palmer: "Ampersand"
7. Ladytron: "Ghosts"
6. Joe Jackson: "Invisible Man"
5. Ben Folds: "Cologne"
4. Gonzales: "Working Together"
3. MGMT: "Time To Pretend"
2. These Modern Socks: "No One's Gonna Miss Me"
1. Red Box: "The Sign" (I cheated a little here - this song hasn't even been officially released but I was able to hear the unfinished version and it's amazing. The album, assuming it's released in 2009, WILL be my favorite of the year).

Ten best albums:

10. Ladytron: "Velocifero"
9. Gabriella Cilmi: "Lessons To Be Learned" (guilty pleasure; 17-year-old Australian with tons of talent, put out a great debut album. She might wind up as the next Britney in which case I'll regret putting this here someday.)
8. Hey Rosetta!: "Into Your Lungs"
7. Glasvegas: "Glasvegas"
6. Friendly Fires: "Friendly Fires"
5. Cut Copy: "In Ghost Colours"
4. Ben Folds: "Way To Normal" (HATED it when I first heard it, it really grew on me)
3. The Republic Tigers: "Keep Color"
2. Teitur: "The Singer"
1. These Modern Socks: "Picking A Lock At The Speed Of Light"

Just got around to listening to Stay Positive by The Hold Steady and it would have definitely been on my Top 10 of 2008. Another solid rock record. I kind of stayed away as their previous effort was hyped to death and I didn't think it was all that great. This one is!

I have to ask, am I the only person on this planet that just doesn't get the Fleet Foxes? I've tried to like their music but it just leaves me yawning.

It's gotta be listened to over a high quality sound system, preferably something like a Googlephonic Stereo with moon-rock cartridge needle and the greatest number of speakers before infinity. We're talking something with high motherfucking dynamic range. It doesn't play well over computer speakers or shitty headphones. One also cannot go about to intently listen to it to see if it's good. There must be some transformational event that accompanies a more-unconsidered absorbtion of the goodness that causes a thunderstruck dawning and perhaps even an exclamation like "S'mofo butter layin' me to da' BONE! Jackin' me up... tight me!"

I think I make three. This could be the making of a full fledged Fleet Foxes backlash.
