I am SO late to this party, but never being known to hold my 2 cents to myself...

That was the singularly most overrated and ludicrous movie I've ever seen in my life. What kind of half-assedness was that? What the holy fuck?! Where does this deranged Joker asshole get all his resources? How's he able to rig an entire hospital to explode on short notice? And when everyone is on the lookout for someone who's going to bomb bridges and ferries, no one checks the ferries to see that they have dozens of barrels of explosives in it? The whole thing is set around an impossibly reality-defying crime spree...that's nothing new in a movie like this, but it's all treated with THE UTMOST SERIOUSNESS, like it could really happen. Gimme a fucking break. Shit like this disgusts me.

And what about how it ends.. and then half an hour later it ends AGAIN? Way too long, way too pretentious, way too self-serious. And what really bugs me is that no one is calling them on it...probably because it was the second biggest grossing movie ever, and ooh, the idiot in it just died and he's just so fucking great. Everyone acted like it was some reflection of our times...some important analysis of violence, terrorism, state power, Bush's America, crime, evil, and the meaning of everything. And ooh, it raised the genre to new heights. COME ON!!!

I mean, that movie touches on some interesting stuff, but to me it was thematically incoherent. It did do one thing. It masterfully tapped into a weak-minded herd mentality that's too easily impressed by anything topical, trendy, and adorative that completely let's these filmmakers slide on having to put in anything coherent and respectful of an iota of intelligence.

Aw come on Blir, suspend your sense of belief for a little while and enjoy the ride. The movie's based on a comic book and they're all about the ostentatious and over-the-top. You can do it...you know you want to [;)] Anyway, I think a critique that's just as studious as the movie itself is perfectly fitting. It's an extension of the movie's entertainment value. I don't mind if that commentary goes either way mind you.....

You're right that movies often operate by a sense of suspended belief Marv, but even fantastical ones have their own set of rules within which they operate. Take Star Wars - there was a set of laws for that make-believe universe, and things made sense within them. This one though, it tales itself so seriously on the one hand but is ridiculous on the other? You can't have it both ways. Lazy and poor.

I agree with Marv. By defintion (and no matter what the Critics and Nolan himself have remarked), comic book superheros operate over the top, with an often complete disregard for the rules of science and logic. Even Batman, who has no superpowers, absolutely could not operate as he has been depicted in just about any media in the "real world". Comments by reviewers like Ebert and others who have praised this movie for how "realistic" TDK was I think are more telling of how little they understand the superhero genre than anything else.

I still hold the same opinion of the movie that I had when I first posted this thread. Overall the best Batman movie (with apologies to the faithful, I always thought Burton's view of Batman was too dour and, let's face it, some of the devices (plot and otherwise) used in Burton's original Batman makes the TDK look like Full Metal Jacket by comparison), and one of the best superhero movies I've seen. I commented on some of the discrepencies concerning the Joker's seemingly endless supply of oil filled barrels, and I do agree with Blir that it does become very hard to suspend disbelief on some of these points. And TDK's praise by some as "one of the best movies of all time"? Nah.

Now Watchmen? That may be a superhero drama with enough realism to sate even Blir [:D][;)]

<p align="justify">It's a fact. It's all over the screen for everyone to see and hear. If some are unable to do so, then it's through no fault of my own. The action in [i]Batman Begins[/i] is so stilted that anything would be an improvement, so to compare its sequel to that bland junk isn't saying much. The first movie looked like an extended Disaronno commercial anyway; what with all that shit-brown photography - one would need to be drinking themselves into a coma to actually enjoy it[}:)]
