Picture Discs/Vinyl Records

Postby glokstadt » Wed Dec 24, 2008 3:24 pm

After re-reading club80's post on 10" Singles, I started to think of all the picture records and odd-shaped records I have in my collection, and also some had 'effects' that were etched onto the vinyl.

I'm remembering a few of them:

Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Dev-o
Side A is Mark and Gerald with nylons pulled over their heads, b-side???

The 7" Single for A Flock Of Seagulls - Transfer Affection
Is a rectagle with circuitry on it.

Split Enz - True Colours
Not a picture disc, but the name of the band in script is etched on side one over the first two tracks... Pulls yours out and hold at an angle to the light, must have the first issue of A+M's issue, or the Aussie import.

I have more, but without looking, I can not recall right now...

What do you own/have in your collection???

Off the top of my head, I think I only have Blondie's Parallel Lines picture disk. I loved picture disks but never bought many because someone told me that they didn't sound as good & wore out very fast.

I have a bunch of Casablanca Records one-sided 12" singles. They had two songs on side one and nothing on side two. It looked so weird to see a record with no sheen or grooves.

The Clash - Combat Rock picture disk.

Elvis Costello - Promo only 12" picture disk

Devo- That's Good/ Speedracer

One side has a french fry penetrating a doughnut, the other side has one of the band members having his ear pulled by a purple salad utensil.

There was a Blondie album where Debbie Harry is licking the vinyl.

Kilburn and the High Roads...early Ian Dury...is red.

Not necesssarily New Wave but the Synergy album "Cords" is clear vinyl.

Not really, the Dev-o album is signed to me by Mark M. and Gerald C. from the time I interviewed them in 1985, so they drew on the pic disc, I haven't played it since!

I remember the picture discs but I don't have any. I was always afraid that the records would not play as well. I have a few pieces of colored vinyl records that I'll have to sort through. Off the top of my head, I know I have a Sex Pistols "unofficial" release and The Damned's "Final Damnation" on colored vinyl. I'll have to look through the collection.

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

I've got more of these than I can list of the top of my head, but here's a bunch of them.

Flock of Seagulls - Transfer Affection Square Picture Disc
The Cramps - Smell of Female
Blondie - The Hunter
Scandal - 4 Track EP disc with Patty Smyth on it, sadly not in "The Warrior" makeup.
Freur - Some Square shape single picture disc but I can't remember the songs.
Return of the Living Dead Soundtrack Picture Disc
A Couple of Saxon Picture Discs
Mr. T. - Mr. T's Commandments
I have more Samantha Fox picture discs than I can count, including some adult oriented ones [:0] The coolest of which I have are these three rectangle shaped picture discs each with a few cuts on them, together the A and B sides of all the records make up an entire album, and they come in a plastic container so that if they're hung straight, the pictures go together and it's sort of like a centerfold.
I have Toto - Africa, shaped like Africa.
Couple of shaped 5 Star picture discs

and a lot more...

Just saw I have The Guana Batz LP shapped as a 'bat!' They are an English psychobilly band, one of the first(?) as they formed back in 1982. I'm guessing they did for rockabilly what 2-tone did to ska, speed it up! [:p]
