The best example I know of is XTC, they recorded 2 albums as The Dukes of Stratosphear, Johnny Japes and his Jesticles, The Three Wise Men, Terry and the Lovemen and as The Colonel (the ska influenced: "Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen").

The Comsat Angels, through circumstances beyond their control, released an album under the name Dream Command in 1990. It was pretty crummy.

Just remembered that Madness played around London as The Dangermen as well as recorded a new album (The Dangeren Sessions) featuring Ian Dury (R.I.P.) on his last recording ever with "Drip Fed Fred," especially the Conspiracy Mix of the song. Enjoy the cool video:
