Always wanted to catch them live. I remember they once did a free show here in NYC's Central Park (back in the '80's)

Great news. I love this band and their chant like choruses. One of the most distinctive bands of the 80's. Hope they still have energy and creativity.

maybe they will tour the usa again

saw them in 85 with the red sails tour
awesome concert
the drummer sits out front and center and does most of the back up vocals like on Kociusko

I would love to see them again. These days (and especially the past 8 years) I welcome their activism as well as their music.

Split Enz and Hunters & Collectors also reformed for this benefit concert. There was two shows simultaneously from Melbourne and Sydney. Melbourne had the cream of the bands, but at least Sydney got Icehouse.

Yeah. Oils reformed in a hurry along with other bands for this event for recent Flood and Bushfire victims. I watched it - Midnight Oil were absolutely fantastic..... Split Enz were pretty good.. but the Oils stole the show... I was amazed.

They could easily sell out many shows worldwide if they toured.. if only Garrett wasn't in politics now it may have happened!

The Oils, Split Enz AND H&C?!? Any chance this concert will be put on a DVD that will be available outside Oz?

I saw the Oils on their final U.S. tour a few years back at the Anaheim House Of Blues - absolutely amazing show. Would love to see them come back. The article didn't mention a reunion tour but didn't rule it out either.

Meanwhile, I posted this on another discussion, but all of their older albums have finally been remastered and are available at iTunes (they're supposed to get the CD treatment eventually but they didn't say when exactly). I got all of them, and they sound great. That's a band whose stuff badly needed remastering - their early CD's sounded like they were mastered from cheap cassettes.

I wonder if that includes all the U.S. forces that rushed to Australia in early 1942 when the Australians were terrified of a Japanese invasion.
I also wonder why they never got around to writing a song about Communism and the deaths of hundreds of millions of people at the hands of this ideology in the twentieth century.
I guess that wouldn't have gotten a favorable write up in Rolling Stone.

[/quote]The Oils were singing about imperialism, not World War II. It might help to look further than the lyrics of a single song... Also the US was scared of the Japanese too, to the point of relocating tens of thousands of US citizens to internment camps.

[/quote]The Oils excoriate aggression, exploitation and imperialism on all sides. (And in "Read About It", they railed against ignorance and the uninformed...) From "Short Memory":
