Fave New Wave Ballad

Postby glokstadt » Thu Apr 02, 2009 2:18 pm

The New Wave genre (and all the genres it encompasses) is mostly known for quirck lyrics, quick tempos, fast beating drum machines, pounding synths, and racing guitar/bass beats, etc.

I was just thinking about what "slow" songs -- like the ones at the jounior/high school dances that you might have hated [B)] or loved [:p] to dance to -- that you like. New Wave slow jams...

I find these songs comforting, kick-back listening, and less "up-tempo" than the frantic New Wave songs they normally produced:

The Cure - Pictures Of You
Camouflage - Love Is A Shield
Depeche Mode - Somebody/Sometimes/See You/Shake The Disease
David Bowie And Queen - Under Pressure
OMD - Souvenir, Stanlow (and so many others!)
The Ocean Blue - Drifting, Falling (and many more...)
The Damned - Alone Again Or?
The Jam - The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had To Swallow)/English Rose
Julian Cope - Charlotte Anne
New Order - Sunrise
Roxy Music - Too many to mention...

There are many more... What are your faves? What other bands? {I didn't want to list everything; so looking for your gem or two![:)] ]

First title that popped to mind when I saw this thread was the Atlantic Mix of 'Ocean Blue' by ABC (I think it's the Atlantic mix --- the one that's heavily instrumental)...

To me, the slow part isn't the most important thing about a ballad. They also tend to be reflective or sentimental narratives, slow or a bit faster tempo. I'll go with a lot of the same tracks from this previous thread on ballads:

http://nwoutpost.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8663

What If We Are - Echo & the Bunnymen
Oldest Story in the World - The Plimsouls
Samson & Delilah - Bad Manners
What's Gone Wrong - The Untouchables
Tears - The Chameleons
Letter to Elise - The Cure
The Bitterest Pill - The Jam
Carnation - The Jam
Love Vigilantes - New Order
Run Wild - New Order
Regret - New Order
Split Enz - Message to My Girl
Weather With You - Crowded House

My all time best: Trojan Blue by Icehouse. Then, in no particular order and only to name one or two per artist:

Atmosphere + Decades by Joy Division
The Things You Said by Depeche Mode
Visions in Blue + Vienna + Lament by Ultravox
In a Manner Of Speaking by Tuxedomoon / Martin Gore
I'll Fly For You by Spandau Ballet
Tragic Comedy by Immaculate Fools
Forevermore by The Mission (pretty sexual this one!!)
Let There be Love + East at Easter by Simple Minds
Ship of Fools by Erasure
Man Made by A Flock of Seagulls
To Turn You On + Avalon by Roxy Music
Souvenir by OMD
Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil
All Cats Are Grey by The Cure

Well, let's stop. They're rushing into my head by the dozen!

Due to the participation of one Thomas Dolby, I must include...

"Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner. So there.
