As we hurtle towards Socialism, I gotta give a thumbs up for Obama's penchant for communication. He seemingly has had more appearances, interviews, press opportunities and supplied more sound bytes so far than the last guy did in 8 years.

BS or not, I feel like he's making an attempt to keep us in the loop. Or at least creating the illusion of it. Either way, he's putting in the effort that shows he has respect for the people he is serving.

I think Reagan had this gift too. W lacked the ability and/or intent to communicate and connect on this level. Easily interpreted as arrogance, neglect or wallowing without a rudder.

I may not like the direction but at least I know where we're going.

I usually stay out of off topic and unrelated subjects not pertaining to music but will occasionally read the threads posted here. I think enzfan pretty much summed it all up, also to note you are a Split Enz fan so that is a major plus [;)]

Glad to see a few persons that agree with my assessment of the current regimen. Now the obligatory GW bashing will begin.

Sheesh. The election only allowed us to vote for McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden.

I guess some of you think things somehow would be substantially better if only "your" guy had won the election. Can any of you explain the basis for this fantasy-- currently shared by you, viewers of Fox News, the John Birch society, and bitter ex-Wall Streeters?

I'm afraid we're catching up with the Euros.

When in doubt about our current state of government, it's always good to go back and look at the source:

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

"Was the government to prescribe to us our medicine and diet, our bodies would be in such keeping as our souls are now."

The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits."

"I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious."

"I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive."

- Thomas Jefferson

Oh shit, I think I just referenced the entire liberal agenda.

What specifically is so bad about Europe? Here are some things which are not bad, so I'm wondering what is so awful that outweighs all of this:

their highly rated overall happiness?
their longer lifespans?

their shorter workweeks and more vacation?

their universal healthcare?

their low rates of infant mortality and childhood poverty?

their low murder rates?

their higher rates of literacy and numeracy?

their greater # of science and engineering graduates, leadership in producing scientific literature, and greater R & D spending?

their industry leadership in chemicals, engineering & construction, and food/drugstore retail?

the fact that sixty-one of the 140 biggest companies on the Global Fortune 500 rankings are European (while 50 are U.S.)?

Those quotes tell us that Thomas Jefferson was an ardent anti-federalist. So what is our takeaway from that? The US became the most powerful and successful country in the world during the 20th century, a period during which the federal government grew at geometric rates. Life and society improved immeasurably during this time, not just in terms of health, quality of life and scientific advancement, but in terms of civil rights and freedom for all-- something which TJ overlooked.

Could our success have been achieved if the US instead evolved into a loose confederation of states with minimal federal government? It's an interesting thought. If you could, would you be willing to trade in the success of what America is today in exchange for your lower taxes-- which, let's face it, is the main reason you and the tea-bagger crowd have rediscovered value in slogans from early patriots.
