DonGately-- Can you recommend anything superb from the genres you mentioned (horror, crime or bizarro)-- some titles that can be easily purchased or ordered which might act as a kind of gateway drug?

<p align="justify">I watch and collect movies. On a year, I watch about 100-150 movies, not counting the ones that air on television and the ones I buy without seeing first. I collect pretty much any genre, distributed by almost any company. However, I do have favourites: Criterion Collection, Anchor Bay, Blue Underground, NoShame, Redemption, Cult Epics, Mondo Macabro, Synapse, AnimEigo, and various assortments of small-time dupers. My collection is small at about 500 dvds and 150 videocassettes, not counting dvds of television shows, music videos, etc (if those were counted, then I'd have about 650 dvds). Strangely enough, I've never been able to hit paydirt when it comes to raer and out of print stuff. I have given - unknowingly - dvds that are rare and out of print to friends as gifts. Once the dvds become rare, I stop looking for it (nothing used is worth twice the price it was worth when it was new[^])

Mash half a lime, spoonful of sugar in a glass, add a lot of ice and top with cane-rum (sometimes referred to as rhum agricole) or cachaça. I like it with Barbancourt 8yr (a freaking steal for $20), but if you can't find that, 10 Cane is widely available and works well.

[b]Sparkling Caipirinha[/b]
Same as above, but ditch the sugar and instead fill the glass half-way with 7-Up. Better for than the non-sparkling for weeknights, when you usually don't want to get bombed before you see the bottom of the glass.

[b]Cuba Libre[/b]
AKA rum & coke with a wedge of lime. Recommended rums: Khukri, Pampero Anniversario, Sailor Jerry's Spiced Navy Rum, Mt Gay's Extra Old (if you insist on spoiling yourself).

Of course, there are a lot of other rum drinks, but I'm generally too lazy to make complicated drinks. If you like super-sweet cocktails, you can buy flavored rums from Cruzan or Nassau Royale-- you pretty much can't go wrong by blending/mixing these with any combination of coconut, pineapple, lime and cranberry juice.

Holy crow. You listed your favorite distribution companies. What are some of your favorite movies (mainstream or obscure)? And/or what are some of the best movies you've seen in the past year (the movie doesn't have to be released in the past year)/

I'm crazy about classic cars. I try to go to a few cool events every year, from the Pebble Beach Concours to the Limerock Vintage Races to the Ralph Lauren Speed and Beauty exhibit at the Boston MOFA (now over). I'd love to eventually make a pilgrimage to Maranello, Italy and the Ferrari Museum there. It goes well with my photography hobby.

You should watch a show called Classic Racers. A bunch of rich guys (Counts and the like) racing vintage cars around places like Spa, The Nurburgring & Laguna Seca. I've seen all three of those cars in the series. I'm watching the Laguna Seca episode on Rush HD as I'm typing this.

Great music in the series as well.

The Gosling Family Reserve Old Rum sounds extraordinary. I'm a big fan of the mojito and I think I made a convert out of Marie also. I've experimented with the recipe though by replacing the mint with ginger and the syrup with honey. If you exclude the sparkling water altogether, it serves a nice martini straight up. I wanted to create something very Caribbean and I love it to death [:)]

I think this is a great idea for a thread. Eight6, I'm Googling the Classic Racers show right now.

<p align="justify">Ironically, I haven't seen a lot of movies that were made in the past 10 years or so. I have to think hard as to what the most recent, good movie was. The first one that came to mind was Béla Tarr's [i]Werckmeister Harmóniák[/i] that came out in 2000 (I thought it was 2001, but my memory is not so reliable); great shots, good score, reliable cast - you can't go wrong with the later Tarr movies (his 80s stuff is a bit boring). The other would be [i]Hana To Alice[/i] from 2004 by Iwai Shunji.

Blir, I've got a home made DVD of Speed, Style & Beauty the Ralph Lauren Car Collection, it aired on the TLC I believe sometime last year, a friend capped it in HD and I converted to DVD. I have a really nice poster with the Bugatti on it as well as the book. Let me know if you'd like me to burn you a copy of the DVD. I WISH I would have gotten to see the exhibit in Boston, must have been amazing to see those cars in person!

Thanks XXX. I've seen 6 or 7 of those movies. It's quite a global selection. I'll try to hunt some of them down. Btw, Stanislav Lem's book Solaris is phenomenal. I've seen the soviet movie (and steered clear of the George Clooney US version), and I enjoyed it. But if you get a chance, the book is fantastic and a short read (200 pages).

Pre-made drinks scare me. I had one such "mojito" this past Saturday at a friend's house. It was syrupy, tasted very artificial and gave me a headache in short order. I might try this Bacardi deal though, based on the link you furnished.

Blir, have you ever considered showing your photography in a public setting?

I must say, I've always been impressed by XXX's filmic devotion. My movie collection is comparable in size but no where near as exotic.

If you like dark & thick reds, I'd check out Spain and Portugal. They're both fantastic values. In Spain, I'd go for any Syrah you can find. In Portugal, I'd look for Touriga Nacional, which is made with the same grape as Port wine, only without the sweetness. Both of these regions have famously dark & inky reds with lots of subtle complexity. Also check out Chile and Argentina's Syrahs, which can be really great if you hunt around.

I think Australian Shirazes are very consistent -- good quality and very good values, but they tend to be very fruity/jammy, as though you're eating a spoonful of raspberry preserves. There are some standouts, though, such as Torbreck and Two Hands.
