Must Be A White Thang

Postby MARV » Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:29 am

Out of the blue, a very white friend of mine said that she loved little black babies. This kind of rubbed me the wrong way...like doesn't she like grown-up black people too? Or was that her very awkward way of expressing solidarity with all black people? It just struck me as odd. It's not like I questioned her position on the matter. You don't hear that everyday. I think the more you make race an issue, the more racism will stay. Fuck, am I making an issue out of race too now?

Are you sure she didn't mean Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield's old band? [:D]

They are pretty cool. Brown ones? Not so much.

Human beings are genetically wired to think babies and small children are cute-- nature provides this as a way to help ensure their survival. Not sure if your friend meant that she loved black babies more than others, or that she loves all babies-- but that she's surprised that she love black ones as well. The latter might suggest some inner tension between the baby-liking trait we all have, and the discriminatory traits that we also have (i.e., the one that says that things that don't match a certain profile should be avoided).

Timely topic:

I'm interviewing drivers last week, and an applicant (who happened to be Black) was confiding in me how the Indian drivers have ruined the industry here, and that the "rest of us" need to stick together to prevent them from totally dominating. Nice to see that White and Black can find some common ground on which to build faith, trust and respect for one another. Surreal conversation.

Reminds me of the All In The Family episode where the Puerto Ricans are moving in next door to Archie.

I seriously think a baby puppy is a lot more cuter than a baby human.

I'm with you there. Babies, with their out-of-proportion giant alien heads, have always freaked me out.
