Clinton secured release?

Postby enzfan » Tue Aug 04, 2009 8:40 am

I seriously doubt Bill did anything but show up for the dog and pony show the North Koreans wanted. The national news channels are reporting Bill negotiated the reporters release, I'm sure the White House had a lot to do with it. Now let's see what the little prick Kim gets.

I see that most outlets are actually being very careful to avoid saying exactly what you're trying to spin and put into their mouths. The phrase most often seems to be something like:

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il issues a pardon to two detained US journalists, state media say, amid a visit by Bill Clinton.

But what's the point beyond this?

Bill has had many publicized releases. One of them wound up on Monica's dress, I believe.

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Lotta negative comments here. But is there anything wrong with former president Clinton assisting in this situation? We needed to send some "dignitary" over there, so why not throw champion schmoozer Bill at the problem? I don't think Dubya would be cut out for this kind of foreign policy work. I haven't followed this issue at all, so I'd be curious to know if there's some basis for all the negativity.

As far as I can tell, it's normal procedure for a two-bit dictator to create an incident or seize an asset and then barter for some favorable terms (and a photo op for state propaganda). Seeing as North Korea is a nuclear power with an estimated army of 1.2 million, it's in our best interest to pay the f***ers off-- as we almost always do. Escalating this into a conflict would be like playing with matches in the middle of a lake of gasoline. To say 'destabilizing' would be a gross understatement (you can't contemplate a military option without factoring in responses from China, Russia, South Korea and Japan).

Excuse me. We're talking about jizz here, and you're unnecessarily escalating and destabilizing the thread.

I think it's awesome. Go Bill ! I saw on one news site that this is a win-win situation for all sides. NK got its apology, as well as "the respect it so desperately craves" with a visit from a former president. ha ha ! While we avoided escalation of a tricky situation. Such a complicated dance, diplomacy. But a welcome sight, nonetheless.

Win-win? Well NK doesn't deserve a win, but I can understand the compromise made to bring the issue to a close. Bush neo-con John R. Bolton doesn't pass the opportunity to criticize the foreign policy, but offers no solutions. These days, opposition to Obama's agenda is apparently sufficient in lieu of actual counter proposals.
