Till this day I will watch the Breakfast Club whenever it is on t.v. Same with Sixteen Candles. That movie still makes me laugh.

I have a fondness for all his films from 84-87, in my opinion, his peak period
but I also had the opportunity to meet him in person at a Psych Furs concert in 1986 at the Universal Amp
He was sitting across the aisle from me and I went over to say hello and I was able to speak to him for time
It was when ferris Bueller was came out and I commented on how great his films were at portraying young people (I was about 20 at the time) in film
He introduced to me to his wife and to the stars of his upcoming film Eric Stolz and Mary Stuart Masterson (Some Kind of Wonderful) who taking a break during filming that week
He also spoke about a film that he was going to make with Steve martin and John Candy (Planes Trains and Automobiles)
It was great at the time and now is a great memory
I am saddened at his death because it was part of the experience of being young at that time of my life
His films will still resonant with us older ones and for other in the years to come because they are timeless

Same here, Marie. I had a girlfriend in high school who I used to watch Breakfast Club with all the time. Definitely a landmark movie. We'd recite that movie line by line [8)] Weird Science was also a big hit with me. C'mon guys, I can't be the only one who had a ginormous crush on Kelly LeBrock [8D]

There are lots of heartfelt sentiments both in the New Wave and the Not Necessarily New Wave forum. just so you know, I started the thread in the latter forum without knowing there was one here already. Since it too gained some momentum, I decided against deleting it. John Hughes was a great figure in 80s teenage culture so the least we can do is give him two threads [:)]

"Sixteen Candles" and "Pretty in Pink" for me. I think it's because I will forever be stuck in that awkward Andie/Samantha stage of my life--the one where you are trying to hold on to your individuality whilst still desperately wanting to fit in (even if you won't admit that you want to fit in--even just a little bit).

Agreed, nicely put. I watched [i]Sixteen Candles[/i] last night and he really captured the teen longing so well. What was portrayed in that movie, as well as [i]Breakfast Club[/i] and [i]Pretty in Pink[/i], was truly what so many of us thought and how we reacted. The geek on the bus. The embarrassing-even-though-you-love-'em grandparents. The awkward school dance. You're right....Hughes KNEW.

No doubt about it - it's The Breakfast Club for me. I was John Bender. In a lot of ways I still am. Huge surprise, I'm sure.

Ferris Bueller was my favourite.

I loved the soundtrack of pretty in pink - but I would love to have seen the original ending of that film.

The John Candy films were great.

What a talent.

He was very significant to a generation.
