here, you have this DVD forever, a hard to get piece, that you can
enjoy every day if you so desire..
well worth 25 bucks..
and it's not a bootleg,as they obviously obtained the rights
to the material,and can legally release it under these conditions

Heh, that's pretty much exactly what it is. Not that that's a completely terrible thing. I'm 100% glad I have it. Warners though has got some balls to put any sort of pomp around this being part of an "Archive Collection". It's not a collection for fucks sakes. It's exactly what you called it - a DVD-R bootleg done by the company. And toyah's contention that you have this forever ignores that dye-based discs most certainly don't last forever. Warner's should be much more forthright about what you're buying.

Regardless, the audio and video quality are perfectly fine. When I do a screen grab, it's 853x480 pix - classic widescreen 16:9 but in standard def of course. It's good to get back those extra 200 pixels on the sides, though it looks slightly zoomed as well. It would be cool to get back the full 2.55:1 ratio though - there's gotta be some stock film out there with the full works that could be turned into Blu-Ray. Still, you can see there's plenty of resolution and area benefits from these side-by-sides of the studio bootleg and, um, bootleg bootleg:

Good news, always wanted a copy of this film! I think in a past thread about the movie someone posted that according to the director, many more bands were filmed and made the cutting room floor as time/length of the film was to long for the theatres... Any one remember this? Which bands were filmed and not included???

A year or two ago, a friend sent me a CD-R of [i]Urgh![/i]. I assumed it was recorded from the VHS tape, but I really do not know. It's awesome, at any rate, and includes Numan's "Down in the Park", which I heard was cut from many airings.

Well, the point of the Warners Archive collection is just that. All of the films in the collection are never going to get a proper DVD release."Urgh! A Music War" will not be coming out in remastered fashion anytime soon. Once a film becomes part of the Warners Archive DVD-R collection that's basically the studio saying "Ok, there's no market for this and we won't make our money back in retail so we'll do this on an on-demand basis only". Look for 20th Century Fox, Universal and Paramount to get into this "archive" idea too (Warners already owns the MGM and RKO catalog).

Nearly all of the films in the Warners Archive are classic yet more obscure Hollywood films from the 20's to the 60's that have no chance of selling well on the market because the audience for classic films has dwindled to nothing. I went 20 years without seeing "Johnny Eager" and "Honky Tonk" (both starring the luscious Lana Turner) and now, thanks to the Archives, I can have both films struck from decent prints on DVD. In a perfect world, both films would be rereleased in restored prints with tons of bonus features but the audience for that film just isn't there, unlike a "Casablanca" or "Gone With The Wind".

It's a bit depressing to see films for the 70's and the 80's become part of the Warners Archive but as we head into the next decade and the films themselves become 30 or 40 years old I'm learning to live with it. After all, when you think about it, "Urgh A Music War" is nearly 30 years old which is about how old the the Abbott and Costello movies I watched on TV were in the 70's. OUCH! [V] Get me the Geritol!

this is available on DVD- not sure what you mean by "clean". No drug use? The source material isn't exactly high definition film/video, so I think there is only so much "cleaning up" that can be done.

WB Archives should do the same with Punk Rock Movie as they did with Urgh!
and they should restore the footage of Cherry Vanilla at the Roxy with Sting
and Stewart Copeland as part of her band;
the Copeland crew obviously moved in from the beginning and had this
legendary early footage removed to distance themselves from the days when
they used punk to get through the door in the first place

Assuming I order the DVD, should I bother with it on VHS? Or was the VHS one the one with tons of stuff cut?

Did this ever come out on Beta?

EDIT: Wow, just read that wiki article...I'm gonna try to hit for the cycle and get it on every format, considering I can play all of them, lol. I'd really love to get the CED of it.

Watched the DVD the other day, and I must say the quality exceeded my expectations. Picture quality and sound are excellent, considering no remastering was undertaken, and this was viewed on a large flat panel TV. Only thing, I'm not sure if it was originally filmed in widescreen. Hope it was, as I hate it when they crop the top and bottom and then call it "widescreen".
