Depeche Mode or New Order

When I think of one , I think of the other. Having to choose one over the other as the better group , who would it be ?

New Order are technically cooler I guess. But, Depeche Mode will always have the edge with me. My music library doesn't lie.

I didn't vote.. when i think of one I do not think of the other though I like tracks from them both.

Do others not necessarily see the 2 in this 'one or the other' sense? or is it just me? (probably the latter heheh

No, I don't bin them together at all either. I just answered based on the who's better choice.

I don't necessarily think of them together, so I'm still chewing on the who's better question. In the 80s I preferred New Order, but these days I actually listen to Depeche Mode more. I saw them two weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at how good and completely modern they sound live! On the other hand, New Order in '89 was one of my all time favorite concerts...tough question here!

Depeche Mode 1981-1990 > New Order > Depeche Mode 1991-present

One thing about Depeche is that they wouldn't pull that New Order Remastered bullshit.

I went with Depeche Mode. New Order would have been the far better band ...if only they'd had a frontman with some personality.

I liked more of Depeche Mode's music back in the day, but as far as output in this decade, New Order has put out much better tracks and remixes. I can't even listen to modern Depeche Mode--they can't even seem to select remixers that give their new stuff a more modern club feel.

I guess what I meant by "When I think of one , I think of the other" is that for me I see these two groups as the heavyweights of 80's music. Kind of like (for me)the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin being the heavyweights of 70's music.

Love them both, but If I had to choose one DM! Why? Catalog and Live Shows!! both band still have the edgy underground tag that other bands like U2,REM and Duran would kill for lol..

I've seen New Order Live it was like watching the Cure, they just stand there.. Dave Gahan is one heck of a Frontman! ala' Freddie Mercury meets Mick Jaggger.. Who would thought DM will be huge stadium acts back when they started..

New Order was pretty active at the '89 show I saw, but you're right about Dave Gahan. He was probably the biggest surprise at the Seattle show in August...I am now convinced that he is one of the great frontmen of all time, and I've been going to concerts since 1977!

Love 'em both, but will give DM the edge both for the live show -- NO wasn't as bad live as they've been made out to be, but they're no DM -- but also because Bernard Sumner is such an awful lyricist.

Love and listen to both bands equally, but gave the edge to DM! Why? Because I've seen them 4 times live versus only seeing NO twice.

I saw NO at Bily Barter's Roller Rink in Fullerton, CA for the Power, Corruption and Lies tour, and unfortunately, their drum machine (or tape machine: reel to reel) was broken and they couldn't perform [i]Blue Monday[/i], sucked eggs, then caught them at the Santa Monica Civic for the Low Life tour. They are absent of any real movement, ala Kraftwerk's [i]Computerweldt[/i] tour--and Rolf, Florian, et al where trying to be manequins!!!

DM has it hands down in the live and for the most part recording output, although the last album I bought was 101!

Saw their Speak & Spell, A Broken Frame, Some Great Reward, and Music For The Masses tours, with The Rose Bowl being their biggest concert to date at that time I believe with openes Wire, Tomas Dolby and O.M. in the D.!!! Great show, I was a guest of Warner Bros., so I was backstage, met all the bands, hug out with Jed The Fish and John Logic, legendary DJs of KROQ, and they were both wasted on coke (not the soda kind!) and mucho drinks....

I had a blast!!!

Dave G. is a brilliant frontman, and they have stayed fresh to an ever-growing (or is it in decline?) fan base. I caught the Jimmy Kimmel Live show they played on Hollywood Blvd., it was fantastic! Pete (aka: Frank Chickens), I know you don't like 80+% of the late '790s and '80s bands that came from the U.K.--and that's ok to!
