This is like a Baseball Hall of Fame debate:

For peak Value, it's New Order. Depeche were strong in the 80s, but they didn't, IMH(BC)O, have an album as strong as Power/Corruption/Lies, Low Life, or Technique. Depeche were great, but New order were innovative. Substance rules everything all around me.

For career value, it's Depeche. For New Order, everything from "World in Motion" on is good-to-horrible. I will grant that Waiting For the Sirens' Call is a great Primal Scream record. But Depeche, after some early-90s soul-searching, have been on a roll, and their last two albums are among the best they've ever done.

I voted for Depeche, but it was close.

BTW, I've finally passed 300 comments, where's my watch?

Maybe, but I think even at the time they were laughed at for nicking from Neubauten. SPK was doing their "Metal Dance" thing around the same time. Fad Gadget had the electropop + industrial noise thing covered already.

If held to the same standards, I'm sure you can find groups that did "it" before New Order.

Funny that you mention Neubauten, since Gareth Jones talks about producing both of them, on the Construction Time documentary.

Which band fits more into the New Wave style ?
Is it wrong to consider Depeche Mode as a New Wave band today ?

Early New Order = Post-Punk ?
Early Depeche Mode = New Romantic ?

I'm asking this because Depeche Mode is performing here in October and local news are labelling them as "Best New Wave band ever".

They're both Post Punk but I don't know if I would technically call them New Wave. That term has been used pretty broadly, even then. If this were a more mainstream discussion then yes, we can call them New Wave.

New Order is classic, all-time great group.

I prefer Depeche Mode though, like the dark feel to their tracks and the creative synth compositions.

Meh, maybe. "Innovative" may not have been the best word, perhaps "more ambitious generic experimentation" is more accurate, if less pithy. Depeche are drawing from an established post-punk canon, but New order's drawing from fesher sources--American Electro and hip-hop--more liberally than other contemporaries. IMHO, of course.

He worked with Fad Gadget too. I do think Depeche's sound begins to mature once they introduce some of those industrial noises. I don't think they quite sound right on Construction Time, which sounds like Mute's house style was forced on the record, but Some Great Reward and Black Celebration subtly and powerfully employ Neubauten-esque tension and ambience.
