Funk...

Postby Max Murdoc » Mon Sep 14, 2009 10:54 pm

...I'm working on my 3rd month of funk (not musical). Any suggestions as to how I can get back to normal (well, my normal anyway).

My doctor isn't one to prescribe pills so, what do you guys do to get back on track?

I'm not one to stay in a bad mood for long but these things never fail to make me happy. Try the following (in order):

-Bang a younger woman.
-Lift weights.
-Smoke a metric fuck ton of weed.
-Get out on the highway and drive way too fast while listening to something awesome like Husker Du.
-Watch "Office Space".
-Drive through the Wal Mart parking lot slowly to remind yourself just how truly superior you really are to a lot of people.
-Tear apart some obnoxious douche on a message board.
-Repeat "at least I'm not Georgie Rockwood" 50 times.

I try to insert more order and deliberateness and pull out chaos and compulsiveness as it comes to work life and finances. I then try to make sure there's enough of the reverse in my personal life.

motors list is hard to beat (especially the Husker Du)
A steady diet of Xanax and Red Bull will help as well

Max I hear you. I hurt my back like 10 weeks ago and I am still in tons of pain and taking pills. The thing is to keep busy. I was really in a funk but you try to think of things in a different way. Hang in there buddy.

That must suck. Any idea what is bothering you?

One thing you can try is to find your most trusted friend, confidant or relative. One that will just LISTEN. Make sure they are a safe person that will not judge you, try to "cheer you up" or fill you with advice on how to fix your life or blab about your secrets.

Spill your guts about what is really bothering you. Get into the pain, sadness, depression with them. Cry if you need to. Reveal that part of you that you have been denying or hiding.

It's amazing how sharing your burden with someone else is liberating and makes you feel better.

I'm not especially religious but this type of "confession" works. Simple but not easy.

Thanks for all the suggestions:

"Smoke a metric fuck ton of weed" sounds pretty good I must admit. I'm the one that everyone spills their guts to so I really don't have anyone I feel comfortable dumping on.

My best friend is going through a nasty divorce and he's pretty messed up right now so talking to him is out.

I'll figure out something....everyone has their funk days, mine just seems to be hanging around longer than usual.

Thanks again

Max, also don't completely eliminate the possibility that you could have a treatable physiologic problem. I would suggest going to a doctor for a physical/bloodwork. There are plenty of things which can make you feel lousy that are rooted in an physiological problem in the body e.g. anemia, slow or irregular heart rhythms, low thyroid hormone levels, low testosterone levels, undiagnosed heart disease, etc.

We are not at an age where these things cannot happen. A neighbor & friend just died 2 months ago at age 40 from a massive heart attack. He was only 40. He had been feeling chest pressure and just felt lousy in general for a few days when I saw him on Thursday (I found this out after the fact). Sunday morning his wife woke up but he didn't.

Had a physical recently with a stress test and passed with flying colors....I think I just need to get laid. That might do it.

Whoa Max, I hadn't looked in this forum for a while. I'm sorry to hear you are feeling low. Smile into a mirror...it will probably make you laugh. Plus it is a good thing to encourage the getting laid part. [:p])

Glad to hear about the stress test.

You know, something else crossed my mind. Maybe you have Seasonal Affective Disorder. Normally that hits in winter, but I grew up near Pittsburgh, so I know otherwise. We averaged a whopping 58 sunny days per year. If I remember correctly you live near Cleveland, and probably have similar weather.

If your budget allows go to Vegas. It's sunny and you can systematically work on accomplishing the entire list that Motors suggested. Though you might just want to alternate between #1 & #3 for a while.[:D]

Though you could do this simultaneously too.

Yeah, but too much of #3 would keep you from remembering enough about #1[;)]
